Bot's tasks for which permission is being sought:

  1. Batch upload images and maintenance of file descriptive info and categorization of files on behalf of:
    1. Institution:Brown University Library such as historic photos that are {{PD-old}} for example the images at the Ladd Observatory Blog
    2. Institution:Ladd Observatory such as the examples at Commons:Ladd Observatory
    3. Institution:Retro-Computing Society of Rhode Island such as the examples at Commons:Retro-Computing Society of Rhode Island
  2. Upload of dynamic content for learning resources at Wikiversity which could be of interest to the larger Wikimedia community. See File:Mu301test.jpg, for example.

Automatic or manually assisted:

Mostly supervised and manually assisted. Automatic unsupervised operation for routine maintenance of file descriptions only or for special astronomical events which I will alert the community about ahead of time.

Edit type (e.g. Continuous, daily, one time run):

Uploads are mostly one time run. Maintenance of file descriptors as needed.

Exceptions are events where the bot would upload a new image version per community approved schedule. Currently updating File:Mu301test.jpg once per day. For special events (ie. w:Transit of Mercury or a lunar eclipse) a new revision of an image would be uploaded every 5 min. for about 12 hours or less.

Maximum edit rate (e.g. edits per minute):

Will not exceed standard pywikipedia put throttle and use maxlag. Typically put throttle is 60 or 20.

Discussion

Institution/author updates look OK for me.
Please use edit summary like MediaWiki:HotCat.js for category changes.
Please make test uploads.
EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:15, 12 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Mu301: Are there any test upload already? --Krd 12:08, 20 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for the delay. I've been sick the past week, but will run an upload test in the next couple of days. --Mu301 (talk) 14:37, 20 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@EugeneZelenko and Krd: Here's an upload test. Special:ListFiles/Mu301Bot. --Mu301 (talk) 23:59, 24 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Why bot could not add Summary/License at upload?
Please use language templates for text in Depicted place/Photographer/Institution/Accession number/Source.
EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:11, 25 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
This two step upload/edit provides a clear and concise (human readable) description to appear in multiple places:
I don't think that is good idea. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:08, 26 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
For example, compare to the summary and comment at [1]. It also allows me to maintain a local copy of the information in a format that easily allows bulk changes later, for example to add the language template. This is mostly useful while I am trying to correctly format the template info during testing and incorporating recommended modifications.
Question: the syntax "depicted place = Ladd Observatory" is automatically rendered as "depicted place = [[Category:Ladd Observatory]]". Inserting the language template breaks this auto-linking. Compare this diff to the prior edit. Is this desired? --Mu301 (talk) 17:18, 25 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
You don't need to wrap templates in language, since templates may be internationalized internally. Same for what could be converted to categories. Only text. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:08, 26 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
What is the intention regarding File:Mu301test.jpg? Is this a test file only that will be deleted later, or are you planning to overwrite files regularly? --Krd 12:23, 26 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Mu301: Not sure if you've seen the above, in any case, update would be nice. Riley Huntley (talk) 19:50, 7 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Closing this as stale as there is no further feedback. --Krd 05:43, 13 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
