  • Please make a test run. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:00, 30 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
    • Trial complete. Trial consisted of removing 2x grandparent categories for files in Category:USAAF Aviator Badges. 34 files had grandparent categories removed, 1 file skipped as categories OK. Commenced 2010-10-01T21:35:06(K) and concluded at 2010-10-01T21:40:38(K). Average edit rate 5.53 edits per minute. Peak edit rate reported by AWB was 10 edits per minute. 100% file check conducted - all edits performed as expected. AusTerrapin (talk) 12:10, 1 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Looks OK for me. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:43, 1 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
      • How do you select grand parent categories the bot will remove?  Docu  at 13:35, 2 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
        • Manually, either by stumbling across them in the grandparent category (usually whilst I am diffusing files in it), or occasionally whilst browsing across the child file or category. In the examples used in the trial, I picked these up whilst diffusing Category:Military insignia. Please note that I am using AWB manually, just at a high(ish) rate per minute. • Sounds good. The main risk if one would do that with random files is that one might remove parent categories where just another subcategory is missing or the parent category shouldn't be there in the first place.
BTW, the easiest way to diffuse categories is to use {{Intersect categories}} (might take some time until Multi operates it). This requires to add the appropriate 2nd category first. This addition is generally more important than the diffusion as such.
One day, maybe MediaWiki will allow easier intersection so cat diffusion wont be needed at all. --  Docu  at 07:44, 3 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
            • I should mention that before I start, I normally check out the category structure to make sure what I am doing is appropriate. Sometimes this will involve tweaking other categories to ensure that information is not lost whilst keeping in mind the need to maintain a logical category schema. This is done manually. Thanks for the heads up on {{Intersect categories}}, unfortunately most of the diffusion work that I do is tricker due to inappropriate or absent categorisation (bot-classification when files are transferred from Wikipedia is a particular culprit). AWB allows me to be more efficient when I encounter clusters of files that can be treated the same - mostly my re-categorisation work has to be done file by file. If there are no objections, we should grant bot status. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:47, 7 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
