Sir William MacArthur Botanical Images[edit]

Very good botanical images of Sir William MacArthur who died in 1882. Here an example and I have also uploaded one to commons here. I wrote the owner of www.hortuscamden.com an email and this is what I got as an reply:

Most of the images are in the public domain free for people to use. There are some exceptions but
these are clearly indicated in the text and in the image caption.
For example, there are one or two from the Mitchell Library or the Australian National Library.
You should get specific permission to reproduce these.
It would probably be best if you quoted the source from which I obtained the images,
but of course I would welcome an acknowledgement for the Hortus as well.

I think there are quite a few rare plant images in the set. Amada44  talk to me 11:30, 2 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Opinions[edit]

I don't like this idea. Hortus Camdenensis is not itself an old work. It is a current, online work, under development. They are illustrating it by grabbing public domain images from all over the place. For example, the example image already uploaded, File:Gelasine elongata.jpg, is from Curtis's Botanical Magazine. It ought to be labelled as such, and put into Category:Curtis's Botanical Magazine, Volume 66. Furthermore the image is a very low resolution slightly colour-balanced version of this scan. If we want this image we should be getting it directly from the source, at the highest resolution possible. I don't mind a few manually uploaded images with low resolution and poor provenance, but I dislike the idea of batch-uploading them. Hesperian 02:06, 23 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, valid points. I'll take the request it back. Amada44  talk to me 21:11, 24 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
