Erling Mandelmann[edit]

As described at Commons:Village pump#Image donation by Erling Mandelmann (permalink) and Commons:Erling Mandelmann, the portraits at http://www.erlingmandelmann.ch/portraits_all/liste.php have been released as CC-BY-SA. It would be very helpful to batch-upload them, using File:Jan Tschichold (1963) by Erling Mandelmann.jpg as a template. Sandstein (talk) 20:50, 9 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much for the speedy help! Looks good so far. Apart from the above, I'm seeing only one issue: "Unknown" is misspelled as "unkown" in the file names (it could probably be omitted altogether there?) and in the description. Sandstein (talk) 21:36, 10 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

+There are some non-trivial description that were wrongly parsed & transfered (this, for example). I think, it's would be good, if bot would transfer verbatim description that it can't recognise. Trycatch (talk) 22:01, 10 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Things to do with the first series:

To do list
  1. rename (or tag for rename) files with "unkown" in the title. Replace |date=Unkown with |date={{unknown}} ✓ Done (Rename ✓ Done, Sandstein (talk) 23:16, 11 September 2010 (UTC))[reply]
  2. check dates for date ranges, add this to |date= e.g. {{other date|between|1982|1984}} and remove the date from the file name (✓ Done checking and tagging, renaming to do)
  3. create missing category pages (mostly ✓ Done)
  4. fix descriptions (and possibly file names) where "&" lead to drop the name of other persons in the image, add corresponding categories (✓ Done except for Bramsen and Alechinsky: seems like the two might got mixed up)
  5. tag for deletion some images uploaded twice (e.g. 1 and 2) ✓ Done
  6. add the images to Wikipedia. some ✓ Done

I added there two galleries with currently unused images. They include search links to fr.wp and en.wp. I tried to remove subsequent images of the same person. FYI, I made an announcement on the French-speaking Wikipedia Village Pump, asking for help in diffusing the images (see here). Response has been very positive. I tweaked the bot to:

  1. remove the date from the title if there is none (why remove the date ranges from the title?)
  2. Add date ranges to the title and use the date range template or Unknown template in description
  3. Add other persons in the title, description and add categories for them(Up to three persons)

Date ranges after names are frequently understood as YOB and YOD of persons. It's not too clear what the dates here related to.
For some series, I was under the impression that the first year is the year of the first image in the series and the second year the one of the last image in the series. Thus I wouldn't add them to the file name of each image.  Docu  at 19:17, 12 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
In any case, I fixed all dates in the descriptions. There are about 35 images left that need renaming. If an admin did that, we could move on. The longer we wait the more replacements CommonsDelinker needs to do.  Docu  at 19:37, 12 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I think I have renamed them all. Diaa abdelmoneim, I think that your changes to the bot make sense, but I agree with Docu that we shouldn't have date ranges in the title, as users may confuse them for birth/death dates. Huh, just noticed something: in the OTRS ticket, the link in the attribution was meant to lead to the main pain of M. Mandelmann website, not the deep link to the source picture. Dunno if that is that important though. Jean-Fred (talk) 16:45, 13 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

To make it easier to check if a given Wikipedia could use a some of the images, I made a gallery at Category_talk:Photographs_by_Erling_Mandelmann#all_images. Just paste it on a page in a Wikipedia and, in preview mode, follow the non-red links.  Docu  at 04:42, 16 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
