תרגום

למה כלי העזרה משמאל לא מתורגמים לעברית?

בניגוד לפרוייקט של ויקיפדיה, שם לכל שפה הקימו פקוייקט נפרד בו תורגמו את כל התפריטים לשפת האם. ויקישיתוף הוא פרוייקט אחד המרכז תמונות ומדיה עבור כל הפרוייקטים של ויקיפדיה מכל השפות. וכיוון שויקישיתוף הוא פרוייקט משותף, התפריטים אמורים להיות בשפה אוניברסלית אותה כולם יבינו (אנגלית). לא ניתן לערוך תמונות הנמצאות על השרת של ויקישיתוף. אתה יכול להוריד את התמונה למחשב שלך, לערוך אותה, ולהעלות אותה מחדש לשרת. אם תעלה אותה באותו שם, היא תחליף אוטומטית את הגרסה הנוכחית של התמונה. Tamuz 19:10, 12 October 2006 (UTC)

רשמקול

מעונין להכניס לויקישתוף תמונה[1] . לתמונה מצורף טקסט אנגלי. במסגרת הכתיבה של הערך שבכותרת אני מעונין לתרגם את הטקסט. היות חסר לי נסיון בויקישיתוף ,ברצוני שלא להזיק לדף שבויקישיתוף אנגלי.

תרגמתי את הכותרות באיור של תחנת החלל הבין לאומית. משום מה הם לא מופיעות כשהתמונה מוצגת כת'אמבנייל, אבל כשפותחים את הקובץ רואים את העברית בצורה תקינה. האם מישהו מכיר את הבעיה/יודע מה הסיבה/מה הפתרון/למי מתלוננים? :-)

אצלי הם לא מוצגים גם כשהקובץ נפתח ידנית. אציין שהתמונות הממוזערות נוצרות אוטומטית על־ידי השרת (והופכות ל־PNG), בעוד פתיחה רגילה של התמונה גורמת לדפדפן לפענח את זה; כך או כך, אצלי זה לא פועל לא בדפדפן (פיירפוקס 2.0) ולא בתמונות הממוזערות. – rotemliss – Talk 14:49, 12 December 2006 (UTC)

תיקון ההסבר של יונתן. כשאתה מעלה תמונה אתה בוחר באיזה רישיון לשחרר אותה (במידה ולפני זה לא היה לא רישיון אחר). מומלץ לתת רישיון חופשי ולשימוש לכולם אחרי הכל זו מהות הפרוייקט. בנוגע לייחוס תמונות ליוצרים יש מקום בתבנית המידע להכניס את שם המשתמש שלך כדי שידעו מי העלה את התמונה. אנגלי דבר עברית

כפי שאתם ודאי יודעים ניתן לשנות את הממשק בוויקישיתוף לעברית - דרך דף העדפות, ושם בחירה בעברית ושמירה, או באמצעות הוספה של מאפיין uselang=he בסוף שורת הכתובת למשל מזנון עם ממשק בעברית. אני די בטוח שאף אחד לא משתמש בזה - זה לא נראה טבעי לראות את סרגל הצד משמאל, יש בעיות תצוגה שונות וזה בלי להזכיר שבמוזילה/פיירפוקס הלשוניות עולות אחת על השנייה. ייתכן שהיה אפשר לפתור זאת באמצעות הוספה של rtl.css שיגרום לתצוגה להראות מימין לשמאל, גם זה לא פתרון אדאלי:

  • רוב הדפים בוויקישיתוף הם בשפות של גויים שכותבים משמאל לימין ומאוד משונה לראות דפים שלמים באנגלית שנכתבים מימין לשמאל
  • בעיות תצוגה קלות (תופעות לוואי תמיד יש). הבעיה החמורה היא שתפריט הניווט באינטרנט אקספלורר מתנהג בצורה משונה מסיבה לא ברורה (למי שמתעניין בפרטים הטכניים זה נגרם כנראה מfloat:right שנעשה על תפריט הצד)

כפתרון לאלו כתבתי סקריפט שעושה חצי מהעבודה של rtl.css - הוא הופך את הדף לנכתב מימין לשמאל, אבל לא נוגע בתוכן שברוב המוחלט של המקרים צריך להישאר משמאל לימין.

כיוון שיש בלובי של מפעילי המערכת גם כמה "משלנו" וכיוון שהבעיה הזו נוגעת לעוד הרבה מאוד משתמשים (איזה מזל שהערבים כותבים מימין לשמאל) אני די בטוח שלא תהיה בעיה להשחיל בלי שאף אחד ירגיש קוד תיקון כזה, אם נמצא אותו כמועיל להודעות המערכת.

רק לפני שבכלל ננסה להכניס את זה להודעות מערכת, צריך שעוד אנשים יבדקו את זה ויחוו דעתם. אתם מוזמנים להעתיק לSpecial:Mypage/monobook.js את הקוד הבא:

לאחר שתעשו זאת שמרו ועשו רענון עם Ctrl+F5. לבסוף שנו את שפת הממשק לעברית (או ערבית) כדי שהסקריפט יעבוד.

התלבטתי האם להפעיל את הסקריפט על מרחב התמונות ולבסוף החלטתי שעדיף להפעילו גם שם. מה דעתכם? Eran 16:06, 25 April 2007 (UTC)

עיצוב עמוד

שלום, שיניתי את ההעדפות שלי לגבי עיצוב העמוד (אם אני לא טועה ל"נוסטלגי" או משהו כזה, העמוד עכשיו צבוע בגוון צהבהב). בדיעבד זה לא היה רעיון כל כך טוב, אבל עכשיו אני לא מוצא איפה אני מחזיר את זה. מה אני צריך לעשות? Idobi 18:39, 19 May 2007 (UTC)

למה כשאני מעלה קובץ מגוגל, סוג הרישיון הזה מופיע תחת רישיון חופשי, אבל בכל זאת דורשים ממני למחוק אותו? מקווה שהבנתם P:

חיפוש תמונה בעברית

Election Notice, Please Translate

The 2008 Board election committee announces the 2008 election process. Wikimedians will have the opportunity to elect one candidate from the Wikimedia community to serve as a representative on the Board of Trustees. The successful candidate will serve a one-year term, ending in July 2009.

Candidates may nominate themselves for election between May 8 and May 22, and the voting will occur between 1 June and 21 June. For more information on the voting and candidate requirements, see <http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Board_elections/2008>.

The voting system to be used in this election has not yet been confirmed, however voting will be by secret ballot, and confidentiality will be strictly maintained.

במקרה שלו הוא עשה יותר ממשהו. לא ניתן לקבל את שם המשתמש שלו במסגרת זו. נסה את מזלך בדף השיחה שלו. שים לב שאתה יכול לאחד את החשבונות בכל מקרה, רק לא את החשבון הספציפי בוויקישיתוף. אולי בעתיד יחליטו לשנות את שם המשתמש שלו במסגרת החלטה רחבה יותר על שינוי כפוי. – rotemliss – Talk 06:39, 5 May 2008 (UTC)

הצמדת תמונה לערך

רוצה לפתוח דף בוויקיפדיה, הכל כבר מוכן ורק לא מצליחה להעלות את התמונה לערך (למרות שהעליתי אותה על פי ההוראות "העלאת תמונה") איך מצמידה את התמונה לערך? תודה

מתנדבים לפרויקט פיקיוויקי

דרושים מתנדבים לטיפול בשפע התמונות שעולות ממיזם פיקיוויקי לקומונז. מה צריך לעשות?

  1. לשפר את הסיווג לקטגוריות. פיקיוויקי נותן קטגוריה אחת בלבד, בדרך-כלל די כללית, לכל תמונה. לעתים קרובות צריך להחליף את הקטגוריה לקטגוריה מדויקת יותר ו/או להוסיף קטגוריות רלוונטיות.
  2. לתרגם את ההסברים לתמונה מעברית לשפות אחרות. בראש ובראשונה לאנגלית, אבל גם לשפות רלוונטיות אחרות: ערבית, רוסית, צרפתית, ספרדית ועוד.
  3. לתקן/להוסיף תגי רישיון בעת הצורך. אחרי הרבה עבודה, הצלחנו לגרום לפיקיוויקי לצרף תג רישיון מדויק לכל תמונה, אבל לעתים יש צורך בתוספת אזהרה שמדובר ב-Freedom of Panorama (FoP-Israel) אם מדובר בתמונה של פסל או פסיפס כלשהו, ולעתים נדירות צריך גם לתקן את תג הרישיון.
  4. נכון להיום יש מגבלה על הרזולוציה והגודל של התמונות שאפשר להעביר לקומונז באמצעות פיקיוויקי. המגבלה הזאת תתבטל או תתגמש בקרוב. בינתיים, אם נראה לכם שיש תמונה שכדאי להעלות אותה מחדש ברזולוציה גבוהה יותר, ציינו זאת בדף השיחה של התמונה, או בדף השיחה של פיקיוויקי. שימו לב - ציינו זאת רק אם נראה לכם שהתמונה ממש מתקלקלת ברזולוציה הנמוכה, למשל אם יש הרבה פרטים קטנים שקשה להבחין בהם.

Licensing update progress notice

The licensing update proposal to dual license all Wikimedia Foundation wikis under both the GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL) and the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License (CC-BY-SA) is moving into its final phase. בבקשה אל תעשו את זה. זה ייצור בלבול נוראי. גם ככה מנגנון הקטגוריות מתחיל לקרוס בגלל ריבוי קטגוריות דומות, וכל מיני תת-קטגוריות לא ברורות. קטגוריות בעברית רק יוסיפו לבלבול. אני נוהג להוסיף הסבר קצר בעברית, ולפעמים גם בערבית, בדפי הקטגוריות הקשורות לישראל, כדי להקל על ישראלים דוברי עברית (או דוברי ערבית) שרוצים להשתמש בקטגוריות האלה. אני חושב שזה מספיק. אולי אפשר ליצור הפניות מכותרות עבריות לדפי קטגוריות באנגלית, לדוגמה הדף "שלג בישראל" יפנה ל-Category:Snow in Israel. אני חושש מאוד מכפילות בין קטגוריית "שלג בישראל" לקטגוריית Snow in Israel. זה מתכון לתסבוכת. כרגע אין תגית "נבדק". יש תגית אוטומטית "בדוק קטגוריות" (באנגלית) שיש להסיר אותה לאחר בדיקת הקטגוריות. אני מודה שאני קצת "טובע" במשימות הקשורות בוויקימדיה בכלל וב"פיקיוויקי" בפרט. אם יש מישהו שמוכן לא רק להתנדב לפרויקט אלא גם לסייע לארגן את המתנדבים - אנא צרו איתי קשר בהקדם. יש כמובן מתנדבים קבועים בעמותת ויקימדיה ישראל, אבל גם הם "טובעים" בים המשימות. המשימות של הארגון הזה מתרבות מהר יותר מקצב הגדילה שלו. טופס העלאה בעברית

כיווניות האתר

אפשר לארגן שהכיווניות הכללית של האתר תהיה מימי לשמאל למשתמשים שהגדירו "עברית" בשפה המועדפת שלהם?

בעיות כיווניות בממשק בטא (Vector)

משתמש Slomox מתקן כרגע את התמיכה בעברית בוויקישיתוף בממשק בטא, הידוע גם בשם Vector. צפויות בזמן הקרוב בעיות למי שמשתמש בבטא ושעברית מוגדרת לו כשפת הממשק בהעדפות.

בעייה בהעלאת קובץ מאתר

אני מנסה להעלות קובץ שלקחתי מהאתר הזה: http://www.kolhashiurim.com/New/Openmes/openmessheb.aspx ותחת הכותרת "רישיון" ציינתי "מצאתי את התמונה בגוגל או באתר אקראי אחר, והאתר לא נותן לי להעלות את הקובץ, אפילו שהאתר הנ"ל "מתיר בזאת להפיץ ולפרסם את כל התוכן הקיים בו אך בתנאי שאינו למטרות רווח והוצאות". מה עושים? בחר את הרישיון המתאים. "רישיון" כפי שציינת אינו מותר להעלאה כי תמונות כאלה מוגנות בדרך כלל בזכויות יוצרים - אלא צריך לבחור את הרישיון הכתוב באתר.
פרט לכך, למיטב ידיעתי לא ניתן להשתמש בכל מקרה בתמונה ברישיון זה, כי תמונות בוויקישיתוף צריכות להיות חופשיות לגמרי, כולל שימוש למטרות רווח. – rotemliss – Talk 08:56, 11 July 2010 (UTC)

מסמך שרשיונו הוסר.

בעבר העליתי מסמך עם אישור של יוצר הקובץ, אך לאחרונה הוא הסיר את אישורו ולכן אין אישור זכויות יוצרים. במקרה כזה כמובן הפתרון הוא המחיקה. כיצד ניתן למחוק קובץ?

In the past I put a document with the permission of the creator of the file, but recently he removed his approval so there is no copyright permission. In this case of course the solution is to delete. How do you delete a file?

אני מתוסכלת

אמש הצגתי שאלות והערות, נראה שהכל הלך פייפן. לא אחזור, עד כי אדע שקולי אינו קול קורא במדבר. אני חותמת, עושה שמירה, ובכל זאת מזהירים אותי שיציאה תמחוק את כל השינויים שלי, וזה, אכן, קורה. שיגרתי תמונות רבות מאד, איני מצליחה לייחס אותן לקטגוריה, גם כשאני לוחצת למטה על כפתור קטגוריה. גם לא בא לי לשוב ולהעלות את כולן. הרי, כולן מזוהות. כשכתוב תיאור האומר שזה עין גדי, זה אומר שהקטגוריה היא עין גדי. את מתניה איבדתי, מסיבה לא ברורה לי. המחשב מסרב לקלוט את הכתובת שאני מעתיקה לשורה הנכונה.

שלום חנה. ראשית אין צורך להלחץ או להכנס לתסכול, אני אשמח לסייע לך בכל בעיה. לא הבנתי בדיוק את כל מה שתארת: כתבת למשל "יציאה תמחוק את כל השינויים שלי" - יציאה מהאתר או מהחשבון שלך לא גורמת לשום מחיקה. בקשר לקטגוריות: קטגוריה היא דף שמאגד בתוכו דפים אחרים. כדי שיהיה ניתן למצוא תמונות בקלות, יש לשייך כל תמונה לקטגוריה אחת לפחות. כך, אם אני מחפש למשל תמונה של אוטובוס כחול אני אכנס לקטגוריה בשם "אוטובוסים כחולים": Category:Blue buses. שימי לב שזהו אתר שבו גולשים מכל העולם ולכן השמות של הקטגוריות הן באנגלית. אפשר להוסיף קטגוריה כאשר מעלים תמונה - יש בסוף הטופס מקום להוסיף קטגוריות. אפשר גם להוסיף קטגוריה לתמונה שכבר הועלתה: נכנסים לדף של התמונה, לוחצים על הלשונית עם המילה "Edit" (או "עריכה" אם הממשק בחשבון שלך מוגדר להיות בעברית) שמופיעה בראש הדף ומגיעים לדף העריכה. לאחר מכן יש להוסיף בסוף הטקסט שכבר מופיע את הקטגוריה באופן הבא: [[Category:Name]] כאשר במקום Name יש לרשום את שם הקטגוריה הרלוונטית. לאחר שתשמרי את הדף, שם הקטגוריה יופיע בסוף דף התמונה והתמונה עצמה תופיע בדף הקטגוריה. אם משהו לא ברור אשמח להסביר שוב. לסברים נוספים (באנגלית) לגבי קטגוריות לחצי כאן. הכל מובן לי. ברור שצריכה להיות קטגוריה כדי להתאים את התמונות לנושאיהן השונים. כשאני לוחצת על category לא קורה כלום! בעריכה אני מתקנת, גם חותמת, גם עושה שמירה, וכאשר אני רוצה לזוז הלאה, אני נשאלת האם אני בטוחה שברצוני להחליף דף, כי אם אעשה זאת, השינוי שעשיתי יימחק. בינתיים, אני מרגישה שהעבודה שלי סיזיפית. התמונות שוכבות כאבן שאין לה הופכין בגלריה שלי, ואני ממש מתקשה לטפל בהן.

אני אנסה לענות לכל הדברים:
  1. קודם כל, אם את מגיבה לדברים שלי את לא צריכה ליצור פסקה חדשה אלא ללחוץ על "edit" ליד הכותרת של הנושא.
  2. איפה את לוחצת על "category"? אם את מדברת על הטופס שבו מעלים תמונה, את צריכה ללחוץ על הפלוס שליד המילה "Categories".
  3. חתימה צריך להוסיף רק בדפי שיחה (כמו זה למשל) בסוף דברייך. לא צריך לחתום כאשר מוסיפים קטגוריה.
  4. את יכולה בבקשה לכתוב מה השלבים שאת עושה כאשר את נשאלת אם את בטוחה שאת רוצה להחליף דף? יעזור גם אם תעתיקי לכאן בדיוק את ההודעה שאת מקבלת.
  5. לא אמורה להיות בעיה להעלות תמונות ברזולוציה גבוהה. מה בדיוק קורה כשאת מנסה להעלות אותן?
  6. אם את רוצה להעלות תמונה שכבר העלית אבל ברזולציה גבוהה יותר הכנסי לדף התמונה שכבר העלית, מתחת לכותרת File history יש טבלה. לחצי על הקישור מתחת לטבלה שכתוב בו "Upload a new version of this file".
  7. כדי ליצור קשר עם מתניה תוכלי לכתוב לו הודעה בדף השיחה שלו - User talk:מתניה.
  8. בלי לחץ, בסוף נפתור את כל הבעיות.

התכוונתי ליידע אותך בעובדה שכן מצאתי את הסטורית התמונה, אך אתה כבר ראית, מה שמעיד שאתה, אכן, עוקב וזו הרגשה טובה. דווקא בהעלאה החוזרת נראית הוספת הקטגוריה פשוטה יותר, אלא, בינתיים לא ראיתי תמונות שלי, למשל - בקטגורית - sunrise. מהו תהליך הקיבוע בקטגוריה? מי עושה זאת.
ושוב, ההערה בקשר לפרה המופיעה בקטגוריית עין-גדי, היא צולמה בגלבוע, עמק יזרעאל.
עכשו נסיתי להעלות תמונה של "הקשתות" בפארק תימנע, בואכה אילת, היא סירבה לעלות. למעלה ראיתי את ההערה באדום על מחיקת תמונה אם לא יפורט המקור/אישור. התמונה שלי ורק שלי וגאוותי עליה.
אולי מכאן תבוא הישועה - לפני שלש שנים איבדתי את מצלמת ה - קוניקה מינולטה שלי, בין הר חזקיהו למצפה רמון. על פי השיחזור, נראה לנו שאבדה או נגנבה בפונדק נאות-סמדר (שיזפון). המצלמה היתה על ברכי בעלי ברכב (אני הנהגת במשפחה), בפונדק ירד כדי לבקש מחברי הקבוץ (המנהלים את המקום) להתקשר לקבוץ, לשאול אם בת דודי נמצאת (היא היתה). האפשרויות הן - המצלמה נפלה, כאשר בעלי יצא מן המכונית, אך, אם איני טועה ראיתיה תלויה על כתפו, נראה לו שהניח את המצלמה על הדלפק, ושכח לקחתה בצאתו, יש לציין שמסתובבים באיזור הפונדק טיפוסים מפוקפקים. רק כשהגענו למצפה-רמון גלינו שהמצלמה איננה. התקשרנו לפונדק, הם חיפשו ולא מצאו. מילא המצלמה, אבל הצ'יפ היקר מפז, הלך אתה. היו שם תמונות יפהפיות של הנכדים שלקחנו אתנו לנופש. למשל - הקטנה בת ה-6, שטיפסה לקשתות.. פירסמתי באינטרנט, פניתי למשטרת אילת, ולא כלום. בין השאר גליתי אז, שלמשטרת ישראל אין מאגר ארצי של אבידות. אמרו לי שהדרך היחידה, להתקשר לכל תחנות המשטרה.... (כבר ראיתי הודעות של אזרחים טובים, נאמר, מעכו, שמצאו מצלמה בנחל פארן). עכשו, לך חפש מחט בערימת שחת.

לגבי הקטגוריות, אנחנו מתקדמים. ראיתי שהוספת בהצלחה את הקטגוריה Category:Mount Gilboa לתמונה של הפרה. יש לי שתי הערות: אחת, רצוי להוסיף את הקטגוריות בשורה חדשה בסוף הטקסט ולא בהתחלה. שתיים, השארת את הקטגוריה של עין גדי. כמו שכתבתי קודם, צריך למחוק את הכיתוב [[Category:Ein Gedi]]. חוץ מזה ראיתי שבתמונות אחרות ניסית להוסיף את הקטגוריה בשורה הקטנה ליד הכיתוב "Edit summary" שזה לא המקום הנכון. השורה הזאת משמשת לתפקיד אחר. את הקטגוריה את צריכה לכתוב בחלון הגדול, בשורה חדשה בסוף הטקסט שמופיע שם. זנחתם אותי לאנחות. אני מבקשת כמה תשובות ברורות - 1. למה לאחר כל עמלי בקביעת קטגוריה, זו איננה? 2. לא עניתם לי בעבר - מה מדיניות הכנסת התמונות, מי מעביר לקטגוריה ומה הקריטריונים? העובדה היא, שרוב התמונות שלי לא פורסמו. האם יש אתר אילת נוסף? יש באתר כמה תמונות של בתי מלון, שזו פרסומת ולא תמונות שיש בהן כדי לעניין את הקהל. שלחתי תמונות נוף, יש לי תמונות בלי סוף של אילת והאיזור, אבל, איבדתי את המוטיבאציה לשגר אותן, הן אינן נראות בשום מקום. כנ"ל, תמונות ממערת המכפלה בחברון ותמונת בית הקברות העתיק בחברון, בלווית סיפור טבח תרפ"ט. אין שקיעות אין זריחות, האם בגלל מזג האויר החרפי, סוף סוף? 3. אין אני מגיעה לגלריית התמונות שלי, בכוחות עצמי, מבלי ללחוץ על משהו, שמדי פעם מישהו מכם שולח לי. כרגע איני יודעת איך להגיע לתמונות, עצמן, רק אל הרשימה הכמעט מקובעת, במספר מצומצם של תמונות. אם מישהו רואה את קריאת ה-SOS הזו, אנא, לשלוח סירת הצלה. --Eisenh (talk) 08:51, 2 February 2011 (UTC)

Call for image filter referendum

The Wikimedia Foundation, at the direction of the Board of Trustees, will be holding a vote to determine whether members of the community support the creation and usage of an opt-in personal image filter, which would allow readers to voluntarily screen particular types of images strictly for their own account.

הבעיה היא שהעליתי כנראה את התמונה עם שם קובץ שכבר קיים בתמונה אחרת בויקישיתוף. ובכל פעם שאני שם לינק לתמונה הוא מציב שם את התמונה הקודמת (לא זאת שהעליתי, זאת שכבר היתה).

Announcing Wikipedia 1.19 beta

Wikimedia Foundation is getting ready to push out 1.19 to all the WMF-hosted wikis. As we finish wrapping up our code review, you can test the new version right now on beta.wmflabs.org. For more information, please read the release notes or the start of the final announcement.

The following are the areas that you will probably be most interested in:

  • Faster loading of javascript files makes dependency tracking more important.
  • New common*.css files usable by skins instead of having to copy piles of generic styles from MonoBook or Vector's css.
  • The default user signature now contains a talk link in addition to the user link.
  • Searching blocked usernames in block log is now clearer.
  • Better timezone recognition in user preferences.
  • Improved diff readability for colorblind people.
  • The interwiki links table can now be accessed also when the interwiki cache is used (used in the API and the Interwiki extension).
  • More gender support (for instance in logs and user lists).
  • Language converter improved, e.g. it now works depending on the page content language.
  • Time and number-formatting magic words also now depend on the page content language.
  • Bidirectional support further improved after 1.18.

Report any problems on the labs beta wiki and we'll work to address them before they software is released to the production wikis.

Update on IPv6

The Wikimedia Foundation is planning to do limited testing of IPv6 on June 2-3. If there are not too many problems, we may fully enable IPv6 on World IPv6 day (June 6), and keep it enabled.

What this means for your project:

  • At least on June 2-3, 2012, you may see a small number of edits from IPv6 addresses, which are in the form "2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334". See e.g. w:en:IPv6 address. These addresses should behave like any other IP address: You can leave messages on their talk pages; you can track their contributions; you can block them. (See the full version of this announcement for notes on range blocks.)
  • In the mid term, some user scripts and tools will need to be adapted for IPv6.
  • We suspect that IPv6 usage is going to be very low initially, meaning that abuse should be manageable, and we will assist in the monitoring of the situation.

As many of you are aware, the Wikimedia Board of Trustees recently initiated important changes in the way that money is being distributed within the Wikimedia movement. As part of this, a new community-led "Funds Dissemination Committee" (FDC) is currently being set up. Already in 2012-13, its recommendations will guide the decisions about the distribution of over 10 million US dollars among the Foundation, chapters and other eligible entities.

Now, seven capable, knowledgeable and trustworthy community members are sought to volunteer on the initial Funds Dissemination Committee. It is expected to take up its work in September. In addition, a community member is sought to be the Ombudsperson for the FDC process. If you are interested in joining the committee, read the call for volunteers. Nominations are planned to close on August 15.

Wikidata is getting close to a first roll-out

As some of you might already have heard Wikimedia Deutschland is working on a new Wikimedia project. It is called m:Wikidata. The goal of Wikidata is to become a central data repository for the Wikipedias, its sister projects and the world. In the future it will hold data like the number of inhabitants of a country, the date of birth of a famous person or the length of a river. These can then be used in all Wikimedia projects and outside of them.

The project is divided into three phases and "we are getting close to roll-out the first phase". The phases are:

  1. language links in the Wikipedias (making it possible to store the links between the language editions of an article just once in Wikidata instead of in each linked article)
  2. infoboxes (making it possible to store the data that is currently in infoboxes in one central place and share the data)
  3. lists (making it possible to create lists and similar things based on queries to Wikidata so they update automatically when new data is added or modified)

It'd be great if you could join us, test the demo version, provide feedback and take part in the development of Wikidata. You can find all the relevant information including an FAQ and sign-up links for our on-wiki newsletter on the Wikidata page on Meta.

Fundraising localization: volunteers from outside the USA needed

Hello All,

The Wikimedia Foundation's Fundraising team have begun our 'User Experience' project, with the goal of understanding the donation experience in different countries outside the USA and enhancing the localization of our donation pages. I am searching for volunteers to spend 30 minutes on a Skype chat with me, reviewing their own country's donation pages. It will be done on a 'usability' format (I will ask you to read the text and go through the donation flow) and will be asking your feedback in the meanwhile.

The only pre-requisite is for the volunteer to actually live in the country and to have access to at least one donation method that we offer for that country (mainly credit/debit card, but also real-time banking like IDEAL, E-wallets, etc...) so we can do a live test and see if the donation goes through. All volunteers will be reimbursed of the donations that eventually succeed (and they will be low amounts, like 1-2 dollars)

Be a Wikimedia fundraising "User Experience" volunteer!

Thank you to everyone who volunteered last year on the Wikimedia fundraising 'User Experience' project. We have talked to many different people in different countries and their feedback has helped us immensely in restructuring our pages. If you haven't heard of it yet, the 'User Experience' project has the goal of understanding the donation experience in different countries (outside the USA) and enhancing the localization of our donation pages.

Wikimedia sites to move to primary data center in Ashburn, Virginia. Read-only mode expected.

(Apologies if this message isn't in your language.) Next week, the Wikimedia Foundation will transition its main technical operations to a new data center in Ashburn, Virginia, USA. This is intended to improve the technical performance and reliability of all Wikimedia sites, including this wiki. There will be some times when the site will be in read-only mode, and there may be full outages; the current target windows for the migration are January 22nd, 23rd and 24th, 2013, from 17:00 to 01:00 UTC (see other timezones on timeanddate.com). More information is available in the full announcement.

If you would like to stay informed of future technical upgrades, consider becoming a Tech ambassador and joining the ambassadors mailing list. You will be able to help your fellow Wikimedians have a voice in technical discussions and be notified of important decisions.

Convert complex templates to Lua to make them faster and more powerful

Greetings. As you might have seen on the Wikimedia tech blog or the tech ambassadors list, a new functionality called "Lua" is being enabled on all Wikimedia sites today. Lua is a scripting language that enables you to write faster and more powerful MediaWiki templates.

If you have questions about how to convert existing templates to Lua (or how to create new ones), we'll be holding two support sessions on IRC next week: one on Wednesday (for Oceania, Asia & America) and one on Friday (for Europe, Africa & America); see m:IRC office hours for the details. If you can't make it, you can also get help at mw:Talk:Lua scripting.

There is a new request for comment on Meta-Wiki concerning the removal of administrative rights from long-term inactive Wikimedians. Generally, this proposal from stewards would apply to wikis without an administrators' review process.

We are also compiling a list of projects with procedures for removing inactive administrators on the talk page of the request for comment. Feel free to add your project(s) to the list if you have a policy on administrator inactivity.

All input is appreciated. The discussion may close as soon as 21 May 2013 (2013-05-21), but this will be extended if needed.

[en] Change to section edit links

The default position of the "edit" link in page section headers is going to change soon. The "edit" link will be positioned adjacent to the page header text rather than floating opposite it.

Section edit links will be to the immediate right of section titles, instead of on the far right. If you're an editor of one of the wikis which already implemented this change, nothing will substantially change for you; however, scripts and gadgets depending on the previous implementation of section edit links will have to be adjusted to continue working; however, nothing else should break even if they are not updated in time.

Ideas to do this all the way to 2009 at least. It is often difficult to track which of several potential section edit links on the far right is associated with the correct section, and many readers and anonymous or new editors may even be failing to notice section edit links at all, since they read section titles, which are far away from the links.

  • The final version of the "single user login" (which allows people to use the same username on different Wikimedia wikis) is moved to August 2013. The software will automatically rename some usernames. [16]
