Bloody mess![edit]

This category is a bloody mess. We need a standard on how to name these user categories. And it should include User: to distinguish it from regular categories.

  • Files by User:Someuser
  • Images by User:Someuser
  • Pictures by User:Someuser
  • Photos by User:Someuser

This is somewhat redundant. I can see it being used to distinguish media types, i.e. Files by User:Someuser containing subcategories with photos by user, videos by user, illustrations by user, etc. --Dschwen (talk) 15:39, 9 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

But what about a naming scheme for files we didn't create? Like Category:Files not created and not modified by Markus3? I'm thinking I'll name mine:
  • Files not by User:Rocket000
  • Images not by User:Rocket000
  • Pictures not by User:Rocket000
  • Photos & non-photos not by User:Rocket000
  • Files not uploaded by User:Rocket000
  • etc.
You get the idea. There's a little redundancy there but I can't really think of another way to do it. What do you think? Rocket000 (talk) 07:59, 25 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A new discussion at Village Pump[edit]

See the discussion at Commons:Village_pump#.22User.22_categories. We need a consensus on how user categories are derived (with or without the "User:" prefix) and whether they need to be hidden. Please comment there. Jee 02:36, 20 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
