Improving subcategories[edit]

Per some discussion on my talk page [1] we probably can improve subcategories for Theater organs. Suggestions for how to do so? -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 14:30, 4 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Clusternote: @Jmabel:
  • It would seem to me that the most useful subcategories would be by manufacturer or type, and by geographic place. The subcategory Category:Theater organs by site seems to be about building names rather than place as I might have guessed? What is the specific criteria - it seems to have lots of subcategories with no actual images of theater organs. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 14:37, 4 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    • Clusternote can doubtless answer better than I, because he created & largely populated these categories, but I believe it is a just theaters that contain (or have contained) theater organs; where there was a subcategory for the interior of the theater, I think that has pretty consistently been used (at least initially, maybe not maintained). However, it seems to me that this is not how we normally do things: it's like having a category for cities containing history museums, or men who have at times had beards. - Jmabel ! talk 14:48, 4 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Pinging @Clusternote again, hoping they will participate here. They definitely have been active recently. I'd really rather do this with their participation, but it's been a week. - Jmabel ! talk 03:58, 12 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    • @Jmabel and Infrogmation: Sorry for too late response, it's a bit difficult theme for me.
I think that it is worthwhile to expand this category for matching with the typical sub-category structure of the other instruments. More specific, the sub-categories such as: (1) ~ by country / (2) ~ by builder / (3) ~ by designer / (4) ~ by decade / (5) by type, may be needed for this category, in my opinion.
On the above my plan, (3) ~ by designer sub-category must include Robert Hope-Jones as a pioneer of this instrument, although, if there is no other significant designers (except for the designers as builders, for example, John Compton (organ builder)), this sub-category can omit.
And, as for the (5) ~ by type sub-category, its members may be implicit default type (i.e. pipe organs with pneumatic action or electric action) that can be ignored, and the electrostatic tonewheel theater organs by John Compton (organ builder). ... At the moment, the expected members of (5) ~ by type sub-category are a few, but it be useful when other arbitrary sub-categorizations are needed in the future, in my opinion.
[And related topics on the issue of Category:Interior of Paramount Northwest Theater and Category:Theater organs by site]: When I created these, there were several rationalize reasons ((a) not only the instruments but also the its surrounding environments are culturally important, (b) the littleness of total number of theater organ sites available on Wikimedia Commons). But these are merely the viewpoints in the past, so if you think they're unnecessary, feel free to remove them. (I expect my minimum duty have been done :)) --Clusternote (talk) 10:10, 12 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Infrogmation: are you interested in taking this on? I have such a backlog of tasks that I really hesitate to commit to this. - Jmabel ! talk 14:44, 12 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
