The Category:Telescopes was created by occasional user Nuno Tavares on 28 December 2004. It has over 110 subcategories, including the sub-subcategories. The choice of subcategories has become a major topic of dicussion. -Wikid77 (talk) 09:54, 25 October 2010 (UTC)

Backlinking sorted sub-categories

25-Oct-2010: To avoid separate letter groups for each subcategory, the backlinks use lead-spaces in the category's sort-key (such as "| Radio" to sort by space-Rad, " Rad"), as follows:

• [[Category:Telescopes| Radio]]<!--sort there as " Rad" -->
• [[Category:Telescopes| Art]]<!--sort there as " Ar" -->
• [[Category:Telescopes| Focus]]<!--sort there as " Foc" -->

By using a lead-space, in the sort-key, then all the subcategories appear in one letter-group (blank) with header "Cont." (for "Continued"). Set the sort key with a capital letter " A" (rather than lower-case) to avoid separating A/a, so use "| Art" (rather than downcased "| art"). As ever, try to think of logical sort-keys, such as "| Diagrams" for telescope-diagrams. -Wikid77 (talk) 09:54, 25 October 2010 (UTC)

Linked from Category:Space_telescopes

25-Oct-2010: I directly backlinked from Category:Space_telescopes into Category:Telescopes rather than consider Space-telescopes as a minor subcategory of "Optical". In the real world, space telescopes are NOT all optical (some are X-ray, or Infrared, etc.). However, "Category:Space_telescopes" is also under "Category:Optical_telescopes" in case some people think they are. I have no problem with a subcategory being cross-linked into multiple categories. -Wikid77 (talk) 09:54, 25 October 2010 (UTC)

25-Oct-2010: Also, I have directly backlinked from Category:Telescope_diagrams into the Category:Telescopes. With so many scope diagrams in the world at large, that category name needs to be listed clearly, directly under "Category:Telescopes" rather than have people wonder if the name is "Category:Drawings_of_telescopes?" or such. Again, I have no problem with a subcategory being cross-linked into multiple categories. -Wikid77 (talk) 09:54, 25 October 2010 (UTC)
