Cropping?[edit]

What's to happen with these, re cropping? They need cropping, they're not useful as resources for articles until that is done. See File:Lantern Slide - Tangyes Ltd, Hydraulic Intensifier, circa 1910 (2).jpg

The question is, do we keep the uncropped versions? Should images be cropped simply, or should they be cropped and re-uploaded under a new form of the old name?

I favour simply cropping them. These are lantern slides, not postcards. There is some historical interest in the originals, but that's in the image history, should anyone need it. They're not postcards: there is no creative aspect to their current uncropped form. See COM:CROP. Andy Dingley (talk) 13:50, 24 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Any cropped versions should be uploaded as new files, keeping the originals here. To overwrite them would be to lose information of historic interest. Andy Mabbett (talk) 16:13, 26 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Removing redundant dead links[edit]

After this work request was done, i noticed most files have two URLs in their source field: One for the museum's info page, and one as a direct link to the image. In the bot edit, we updated the URLs for the info pages (example format: https://collections.museumsvictoria.com.au/items/803557), but the direct image links (example format, dead link: http://collections.museumvictoria.com.au/content/media/37/433787-original.jpg) were also updated, incorrectly because they were never on the new museumsvictoria URL scheme. However, when on my way to revert, i noticed two things about these direct links: Every one of the ones i checked is dead, with no captures on the wayback machine, and the current museum info pages already serves a download of these images with no loss of resolution. If there's nothing to lose from this, I'd propose we remove all of the unarchived links, to reduce confusion and clean up the pages. This is a bit more complicated than simply deleting a line from the "source" field, as these pages have a lot of metadata that might need cleanup. An example of a page that would require this cleanup is File:Lantern Slide - Tangyes Ltd, AA Type Oil Engine & Gear-Driven Vertical Plunger Pump, circa 1909.jpg. Are there any downsides to performing these edits, and would a bot be able to clean the superfluous links? YuriNikolai (talk) 02:56, 11 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I've only looked at a couple of these recently, but there seemed to be a 1500px version available at the new URLs, whilst our originals here were 3000px. I couldn't find the 3000px versions anywhere. Andy Dingley (talk) 09:22, 11 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I've already complained about the removal of the original source links, and asked that that bulk edit be reverted. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 18:38, 11 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The images on the new URL are 3000px (see file linked above), they just display a 500px thumbnail but the full size is available on the same page (Reuse this image > Large; the large size is 3000px). If any file's full size image can't be located at its new URL, then ofc let's revert ASAP for those files. YuriNikolai (talk) 22:08, 11 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Pigsonthewing: So for any images you can't find at old URL of form https://collections.museumvictoria.com.au/content/media/37/433787-original.jpg or new URL https://collections.museumsvictoria.com.au/content/media/37/433787-original.jpg for items of form https://collections.museumsvictoria.com.au/items/803557 , please use new media URLs of form https://collections.museumsvictoria.com.au/items/803557/media/433787/large .   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 13:40, 15 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
