Official name[edit]

While the consensus seems to be that within Commons the preferred name for this arch is the singular "South Window", there is substantial and somewhat valid argument for the plural "South Windows":

  • The United States Geological Survey (USGS) lists (though likely in error, but nevertheless officially) the plural "South Windows", with the singular as an alternate name.
  • Despite what the National Parks Service (NPS) indicates in its publications, the NPS defers to the USGS with regards to correct naming: "Geographic feature names derive from USGS maps and conform to Board on Geographic Names standards, although discrepancies may exist. Check with the Board to confirm all spellings." (Sources & Accuracy for NPS Maps, as published by the NPS)
  • The plural is not limited to just the USGS database, but is included its 2017 detailed map The Windows Section, UT (which likely the most recent one published).
