There is a dispute over using the name "Sea of Japan" to refer to the sea bordered by Russia, Japan, North Korea, and South Korea. Although Sea of Japan, or equivalent translations, are commonly used in international productions, North and South Korea are proposing different names. --71.91.23.49 20:09, 17 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

But since this different name is internationally not recognized the common name is sufficient (and so for the English name). Beside: There is allready written 동해 instead of 일본해. But maybe we should expand this name to (조선)동해 due to that North Korea prefers and uses constantly 조선동해 while 동해 is a term only used in South Korea?
