This whole category tree is useless. It's interesting where paintings are from, and much less where they are (Paintings in ...). Since obviously no one knows how to actually use these categories, they don't do anything but uselessly clutter our navigation. For which scholarly or simply curious question "1872 paintings in the US" supposed to be meaningful? --FA2010 (talk) 17:24, 21 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Short explanation[edit]

This has probably been explained better somewhere else - but since I could not find it, maybe neither could you, so here goes:

  • Paintings from "country" are paintings made by an artist who was a citizen of that country.
  • Paintings in "country" are paintings that are now in that country.
  • Paintings of "country" are paintings with a motive from that country, no matter who painted it.
