What about the villages? / Che ne facciamo dei paesi?[edit]

Hi all! I was wondering what to do with the villages not-capital-of-province: I saw that lastly some (a bot? I don't remember) passed to move my pictures here from Night in Italy: OK, but shouldn't we create something like Night in Italy by province?

Ciao a tutti! -- Massic80 Contattami 20:59, 18 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Remember that in the Categories of Italy by city there are not only the capitals of italian provinces, but all municipalities. There is a discussion that "city" is not the correct word, and have to be changed in "municipalities". For our problem, I think that the solution is to create sub-categories by region where in the regional categories we can put the different cities, and then all pictures of the villages (frazioni). I would let beside the categories by province, because they are very few (see here). --DenghiùComm (talk) 09:06, 19 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Re-Ciao, Denghiù! :)
I didn't know that this was for all municipalities (and in this case the category should be renamed SOON - where is the discussion?), but the categories here are (thanks God) hierarchical. Creating a regional category would be a higher level of hierarchy, and wouldn't help much. If someone added a picture from any Italian municipality, how could I find the way between the hundreds of municipalities in a region?
Yes, they say (me too) that the provinces of Italy should be removed, but they may be useful here :) Who cares if they are few? Maybe they are few only because nobody made an effort to make them ;) -- Massic80 Contattami 10:51, 20 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Massic80! It's only a problem of quantity. We cannot make a Category for each picture. If you look at the categories by province, you will see that there are a subdivision by province for categories which have hundreds or thousands of files. If they are not so many files, it's sufficient a upper category like by region. You can see that this is the solution e.g. for the Category:Villages in Italy where you find all frazioni they are charged in Commons. There, for all Regions we have only villages by region (because they are few); for the region Trentino-South Tyrol we have a subdivision by province (because they charged a lot of villages). For the "city" problem I will you answer in your talk page. --DenghiùComm (talk) 13:42, 20 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, we can't make a category for each picture, nor we can make a category for each municipality or village, if they are not present. But I think we can invite people to categorize the pictures better, if we create a good basement. And we could invite them to "fill" their favorite places' subcategories :) Writing "cities in Italy", not sub-categorized, people will (in the best case) categorize their pictures in this page, and when the pictures will be some hundreds (yes, they aren't many, actually, but may grow quickly) it will be a disaster re-categorizing them. Why should Trentino be a "Regione a statuto speciale" also on Commons? :) ;)
About the "villages page", I didn't know about it's existence, but is that only for not-municipalities? -- Massic80 Contattami 14:10, 20 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, we use "village" for the italian "frazioni". Not all agrees this solution, but at the time this is the best solution. Really we don't have a word in english which is equivalent with our frazione. In our category Night in Italy there are some pictures which have to be placed in theyr specific category (e.g. Milan). Trentino-South Tyrol distinguish all categories by province because one speaks italian (Trentino), the other german (South Tyrol). They don't want to be confused. --DenghiùComm (talk) 16:25, 20 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Not to be boring, but having also villages, separated from municipalities instead of sub category of the same, would only make it worse! We have 88000 municipalities: how many villages there may be? -- Massic80 Contattami 19:09, 20 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
No, the municipalities in Italy are only (!) 8094. How much are the frazioni, I don't know. --DenghiùComm (talk) 08:38, 21 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Whoops I wanted to write 8800, and I wrote one more zero :) And sorry for having been wrong anyway for a good 10% ;) -- Massic80 Contattami 10:05, 21 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
