I object most strongly to the unilateral undiscussed move of category "Musicians of New Orleans" to "Musicians from New Orleans". Most importantly, it has made a lie for many of the included subcategories and members. There is no shortage of musicians born elsewhere who have made their careers in New Orleans. I think the inappropriate move should be undone promptly. @Themightyquill: -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 15:43, 4 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Infrogmation: It's not unilateral, it's standard practice across commons. We have no Category:Musicians of the United States or Category:Musicians of Louisiana, we have Category:Musicians from the United States and Category:Musicians from Louisiana. COM:PEOPLECAT is very clear: "Doing something somewhere → [Occupation] from [location]". Using "from X" doesn't mean "born in X" but resident there. If it didn't, Category:Musicians of New Orleans should not have been in Category:Musicians from Louisiana since 2011, or linked to en:Category:Musicians from New Orleans on wikipedia. I'd appreciate if you'd reverse your reversions. - Themightyquill (talk) 11:55, 5 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the belated explanation. I find this rather distressing, but see it is a more general problem. "From" "of" and "in" seem rather simple English language words with long established meanings, and I don't know why we should invent new meanings only used in Wikimedia for them. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 15:15, 5 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure what you mean by belated explanation. It's in my edit summary when I moved the category. If you'd like to take the broader issue to the village pump or CFD for further discussion, that's fine by me. - Themightyquill (talk) 19:19, 5 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
