The federal state of Germany "Mecklenburg-Vorpommern" has its official name in German and as the article Mecklenburg-Vorpommern of Wikimedia Commons uses the german name, so should do this Category of Wikimedia Commons (having redirections from the English and other translations of the name to Category:Mecklenburg-Vorpommern).

Should it be Category:Mecklenburg-Vorpommern according to the name of the state or has it to be Category:Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania according to its English translation?

There is a discussion about this (partly in German) on the page Category_talk:Hesse.

Categories have to be in English, articles not[edit]

I thought categories have to be in English, and articles in native language. Why was the category Category:Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania moved to Category:Mecklenburg-Vorpommern? Category:States of Germany shows that it is clearly Category:Bavaria and not "Bayern", Saxony and not Sachsen, etc.? Again, I am not talking about articles here. There is a guideline explicitly stating that "Categories are in English". However, the english article, located under "Mecklenburg-Vorpommern", states "Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, often officially translated as Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, is a state in northern Germany." If in doubt, the name can be taken from the corresponding English language edition of the Wikipedia which, in this case, is named Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The English language edition of the wikipedia can provide some consensus about the question which name, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern or Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is more commonly used in the English language. You may see a requested move on w:Talk:Mecklenburg-Vorpommern#Requested move, which decided to move the page to the current lemma. We should not fight this battle over and over again. Code·is·poetry 13:50, 3 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Categories have to be in English, but English is a living language, so we need sources to determine the correct English term for a given subject. I have proposed (in Commons:Naming categories) to use the English Wikipedia as a reference. In the present case, we can assume that the article current name, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, complies with the naming conventions, in particular Wikipedia:Naming conventions (geographic names).
I have noticed that this article was moved a few months ago. I disagree this move. However, I consider that as out of the scope of Wikimedia Commons: hence, unless more serious reasons are found, this category would not be moved. --Juiced lemon 17:26, 3 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
