Doubt

I'd like to understand why it is not allowed to create subcategories for the license tags. It would be easier to research for tags specific to certain countries and cases, for instance, instead of put all together here, without at least rules to label them. --Tonyjeff 14:24, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

Hello. I think you can put them in more precise categories as well, but I find it quite useful to have all of them on one single category, when you're off for some maintenance or translating help pages about license tags, it becomes quite useful. Well, licence proliferation makes it impractical to search for a specific licence. I'm trying some grouping for the main ones (CC, GFDN, PD) so the remaining ones may be more easily seen. Michelet-密是力 10:29, 10 June 2007 (UTC)

The statement was added by User:Duesentrieb over a year ago. It's likely that some of his tools required it at the time, so perhaps it's best to ask him if it is still needed. I tried a couple of the obvious tools and they seemed to still work, so it's possible the need is no longer there. I can definitely see the potential for all license tags being in one category helpful for automated tools though. Carl Lindberg 16:00, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

Fair enough, but imho the readability of the classification is a priority for human readers. Automated tools can handle one level of sub-categories, if they are told to, can't they? (forall My_subcat in Big_category.subcategories do begin ... and that's all) Michelet-密是力 05:21, 25 June 2007 (UTC)

New sub categories

I was bold and went ahead and created a couple new categories. First, I added Category:Custom license tags for all tags that are for specific sources (not counting things like LOC or NASA, but private collections or individual photographers and things like that). I think this division will be helpful and it will make a pretty big split. This category is far too big. Inside of Category:Custom license tags, I added Category:User custom license tags. This is for those users that decided to make customized license tags in the template namespace. This should be moved to the user namspace but since we got so many, I figured we can deal with that later and for now just group them together and get 'em out of the way. I'm thinking about splitting off all the PD ones. I'm not sure how yet and I got work on the ones I just created but I'll be getting to that soon too. - Rocket000 01:44, 20 February 2008 (UTC)
