Unclear

re: This is a tag category that should contain all templates that are used for internationalization. It may be used by external tools and MediaWiki extensions, to easily identify i18n-templates.

1. ?Internationalization means what? Sounds like the US government or the press PC-speak; what's it mean?
2. ?Ditto- 'i18n-templates'; all notations should be written assuming new editors without a historic background knowledge, or confusion is just the result!

... is really short sighted. No one can forsee all eventualities, and this smacks of unrealistic ideal for the covienience of one or two parties, not clarity or clear thinking, nor consensus decisions. Who's got the clout to make this kind of blanket pronouncement? Even Jimbo wouldn't state things so strongly, save perhaps on vandalism! Many templates in this category are category:internal link templates and some are category:interwiki link templates. Those structures (along with say wiktionary:category:linking parent categories are better thought out administration trees than this attempt (and the similar one in category:link templates to restrict the commons management of these tools to someone's idea of 'good enough'. Especially in light of most editors penchant to only contribute here as a sideline of other sister projects, and not make this their main wiki project. Such demands as much interwiki compatible organization as can be managed to let them lay thier hands on the tools and tricks of the trade here. At the least, such categories elsewhere used in administration ought to be coded using the hard redirects that some use has been made of in Wiktionary, the next other large English language project—and the main languge here is English, not otherwise despite the international efforts to spread the wealth, so to speak. The longer established, well thought out wikipedia template category system hammered out by many more persons insights is the better model for all sister projects, not some artificially unnecessary contraints which limit how easy it is to port things interwiki, many of which have been tools developed in Meta. // FrankB 17:09, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

Procedure for adding new templates?

I was planning to add some Greenlandic names to some plant galleries and I happily entered {{Gl}} assuming that the international two-letter code for Greenland would expand to Greenlandic. However, I got Galego instead. After surfing around around for a while, I found all the language templates are defined here, but apparently none for Greenlandic is defined. How should I create one? Which letters should I choose considering {{Gl}} is taken already? -- Slaunger 19:40, 9 December 2007 (UTC)

Clarification: I have now understood that the Wikimedia abbreviation for Greenlandic is really "kl". This abbreviation is not implemented in some templates, which confused me. -- Slaunger 11:36, 13 December 2007 (UTC)

Split

I'm wanting to divide this category up a little. I want to create a subcat for either the language code templates (like {{En}} and{{De}}) or the language link templates (those that contains links to other translations, usually these end in /lang), or both. I'm not sure what to call these categories. Any suggestions? Rocket000 18:00, 19 April 2008 (UTC)
