I have to disagree. As someone who creates SVG images, even as replacements for PNG images, I know that I don't usually use the original image. Notably if the image is a commonly recognizable image, such as a flag or coat of arms, a street sign. It is merely another version of the same representation. Ok, but when people come from Wikipedia-project and ask why their PNG files have all been deleted, I'll direct them to you. Possible, people will stop upload PNG files here, and prefer the local Wikipedias instead. / Fred Chess 03:54, 8 February 2006 (UTC)

Fred, maybe I'm missing a point, but when people upload a PNG file to Commons, they're subjecting the file to our policies and procedures. When they "come looking for their PNG's", maybe the place to start would be the article in which the image is being replaced. Then they'll see what happened to their "PNG".

Furthermore, for all files we delete because they are being replaced, we provide a at least month's worth of Cross image to explain what's happening to the image. If its a PNG Map of Wisconsin showing a dot of Madison being replaced by an SVG Map of Wisconsin showing a dot of Madison, the creator of the PNG deserves no credit whatsoever. On the other hand an SVG version of a user's charicature of Margaret Thatcher deserves credit, based on the creativity that went into.

Commons isn't a repository of creative skill, this is a resource for the various projects. What is useful and legal will be retained.

Finally, if find any users who are complaining that we replaced their PNGs with SVGs without crediting them, I'll be happy to answer any questions. Cary "Bastique" Bass ^parler _voir 17:17, 8 February 2006 (UTC)

SVG text

I know this is a stupid question, but when we're creating SVG images to replace letters/text, should we convert to paths or leave as embedded text?

Accurate rendering of paths is better supported, but when it doesn't really matter if the text looks a specific way, then plain text should be fine. ¦ Reisio 12:11, 11 December 2006 (UTC)

SVG ???

I got here while looking for information on SVG images after finding that my browser (Fire Fox 1.0.7) will not open them. When I click on a thumbnail for a higher resolution SVG image I get an "Open this image with AcroRd32.exe" dialog which reappears every time I click OK. My point being should not Wikipeadia be accessible by everyone without having to download new plugins or fiddle with settings? In particular this should be true for fundamental things like images. Is it not premature to adopt a new image format until the vast majority of browsers can access it straight out of the box? I feel Wikipeadia should be what it is, an Encyclopaedia, not an experimental proving ground for new technology.

If you have a Firefox version 1.5.0.8 that doesn't display SVG, you've either got some odd/unofficial build, or the SVG(s) in question is/are rather (usually safe to say 'overly') complex. ¦ Reisio 13:05, 16 December 2006 (UTC)

PSTricks (LaTeX) Rasterizing

You are right, graphics created with pstricks are vector graphics at the beginning. But saving them as PNG converts them to raster graphics and eliminates the advantages that come along with vector graphics. That's why those PNGs should be converted to SVG. --norro 22:07, 20 March 2007 (UTC)

Yes, but this is like SVG. SVG is converted in a bitmap graphic, at last at least on a screen or on a printer. PSTricks, like SVG, is a language (like LaTeX with HTML). Why not a rasterizer (?) for PSTricks ? It seems to exist on some web sites. Rude, petty waste of time

11-May-2007: The effort to force images into SVG format has unfortunately produced a rather vicious, rude impact on works-in-progress by original authors not using SVG format. Even GIF files that are a mere 1766 bytes are being hounded for such petty, senseless conversion, regardless of the plans of the original authors for those images, and a result, the rude and petty reformatting of images has produced many hours of frustration and extreme aggravation (gee, image that, huh?). Apparently, files are merely assumed to be in final form, with no comprehension that the original author intends to edit/upgrade images from the original (non-SVG) format. Let this be a first, and formal, notification that the whole concept of rampant reformatting of images, even those of trivial and petty sizes, is completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated much longer. N.B.: I am hereby giving due warning to cease and desist the rude and petty waste of time involved in the reformatting and deletion of images. -Wikid77 11:53, 11 May 2007 (UTC)

Conversion to SVG format doesn't necessarily entail the deletion of the original. And even if the original raster image does get deleted after an SVG version is produced, why would that stop the original author from uploading improved versions of it later on? It would be a bit of a hassle to have to keep re-converting it to SVG to implement the improvements in the vector version as well, but that's not effort that the original author is having to go through. I should note that in most cases an SVG is much easier for other editors to modify than a raster graphic, which is more in keeping with the Wikipedia philosophy.

Finally, the {{Convert to SVG}} template doesn't mean "this worthless piece of junk needs to be replaced immediately", it means "this image would make a good SVG and it would be nice if someone would convert it to that format eventually." Any insult or hounding that you're reading into it is not intended. Bryan Derksen 22:05, 11 May 2007 (UTC)

File size has nothing to do with the reason for conversion. It's to enable easier editing. Generally it's applied to "abandoned" images, but if an image is being actively edited it is a good idea to notify the people working on the bitmap image if you're working on a vector image to avoid duplicating effort. Nevertheless, the Convert to SVG tag does not force you to do anything, and you can go on editing the bitmap version if you really want to. It just seems a lot more difficult to me. Install a LilyPond-Plugin for Wiki

Many pictures, which should be converted into the SVG-format , are scores or tabulatures. But it is however neither simple, nor practicably, nor quick drawing music as vector diagram. No simple way is well-known, in order to draw scores as vector diagram. It is been said, that LilyPond can do it. But the Programm use DOS, and this don't run easily on different versions of windows. I heard that there it a plugging for OpenOffice. Is it possible to integrate a LilyPod-plugin for Wiki, that could be used just as the Math-plugin. Many notes should be drawn as SVG. How to notify when an SVG is created?

I just converted an image to SVG and uploaded; however the process for using it instead of the older PNG version is unclear to me. Is there a guide on how to do this properly?

Mass re-cat-ting images for conversion

I just spent the better part of the last few hours moving images around from this category to sub-categories where appropriate, something over a 1000 images. However, that's painful as it isn't just a matter of using cat-a-lot but instead templates have to get arguments. Sort on usage

Is there a way to sort the images in the category or its subs on usage. Maybe trough an external tool or something? I want to help out by converting images to SVG but since I have limited time I'd like to not spend my time on images that aren't being used. Thanks ~ Zirguezi 19:03, 17 April 2014 (UTC)
