Category:Images by text[edit]

Category:Letter combinationsMerge intoCategory:Images by text
Category:BAT letter combinationsMove to/Rename asCategory:Text:BAT
It seems we have two parallel systems for categorizing images depicting specific text:
  1. Category:Images by text with categories such as Category:Text:Bus
  2. Category:Letter combinations with categories such as Category:BAT letter combinations
It seems the original intent of the first was focused more on words (generally English), while the second more on initialisms and such, but there is overlap and no real need for two seperate systems. I suggest we merge the two although I am not 100% sold on one direction or the other. I would think the "Text:text" format would be more universally usable as it can account for any letter case, handle small and large text strings with equal ease, and incorporate alphanumerics. However, the second format is on the face of it more human readable, so I could se an alternate view here, but either way, we certainly should not continue with two seperate systems to do essentially the same thing.

Category:Images by text[edit]

All of these categories seem to try to create a new namespace, which doesn't exist. Either the namespace should be created, or these categories should be deleted. Mike Peel (talk) 21:37, 18 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

How can I create a "namespace" Mike? @Joshbaumgartner
I see File:Writing schemas for Wikidata.pdf- Are Wikidata schemas needed?
Where do I find more Information on what you call a "namespace?"
Do you have suggestions on how to "create a new namespace" in order to keep these categories? Thanks, --Ooligan (talk) 02:15, 19 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Ooligan: A 'namespace' is like 'File:', 'Commons:', 'Category:' etc. They need a Commons:Requests for comment to be created, and that's unlikely. I'm not convinced these categories should be kept - but if they are, they should be moved to names that don't have ":" in them, for example 'Category:Files containing the word Coal'. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 07:34, 2 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Mike Peel and Ooligan: I have been working on some of these and have been trying to work within the existing structure. However, you are right that the name format should probably be change. I don't think they should be a different namespace, but the names changed to something more in line with normal Commons category names. For Category:Text:Love, for example, there are some different ways that might work, but I wonder if the simplest would be to change to Category:Love (text). This would match how numbers are done (e.g. Category:747 (number)). Josh (talk) 12:22, 19 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Joshbaumgartner: That 'simplest' change sounds good to me. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 12:29, 19 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Joshbaumgartner - @Mike Peel - The suggestion by Josh to change the "Category:Text:xxxx" categories to "Category:xxxx (text)" looks good. Also, that it matches the current category format used for numbers would be a simple change. How do these changes get done? I can do the work, but need to know the appropriate process. Thanks, Ooligan (talk) 19:07, 19 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Ooligan: First, we should give a little time for any further contributions to the discussion. If by Friday there are no objections, I can complete the CFD closure process and we can begin implementing the change. In my opinion based on the number of categories affected, you and I can probably just make the change directly faster than tasking a bot. Feel free to ping me after Friday to remind me to circle back around to this one. Thanks! Josh (talk) 01:42, 23 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Joshbaumgartner, @Mike Peel - OK, Friday. So, do I just "move" pages by renaming them to the agreed format? Also, is our dialogue here enough for me to take these actions in the spirit and best practices of Commons policy and practice? Just checking. Thanks, --Ooligan (talk) 02:20, 23 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Ooligan: Once this discussion is closed, we can start doing the move, until then I would hold off. However, we already have three people who have given input and seem to be in agreement on the new format. If you know of other significant contributors to the text categories it would be good to ping them, but frankly, unless someone voices dissent, there is no reason to drag it out much further. As for the move itself, the process I use is to link this discussion in the talk page of the category, then do a move on it to the new name and state "per CfD, see talk for details" as the reason for the move. Make sure to move all content to the new category of course. I leave the old categories as redirects as a general rule, at least for a while. If later they are deemed unnecessary, they can be SD. Thanks! Josh (talk) 02:28, 23 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Joshbaumgartner, @Mike Peel - Thank you for the process suggestions and comments. --Ooligan (talk) 02:34, 23 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Good luck with making the changes. If I can help at all (particularly if it turns out bot code is needed), let me know, but I'm mostly going to be offline for a week from this weekend. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 09:25, 23 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
