License of the illustration[edit]

Different file pages have different license statements on apparently Idea Ink's work. Which one is correct? File:Nara_Koh_Siobhan_Leachman_MRD_01.jpg says CC0, while File:Wikimania Singapore 2023 illustration.jpg says CC BY-SA 4.0. (Also, in the latter case, the author should probably be Idea Ink instead of OSpingou (WMF).) whym (talk) 13:20, 13 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Furthermore, AAnton-WMF uploaded [1] and other files with {{cc-by-sa-4.0}} and author=[[User:AAnton-WMF|AAnton-WMF]]. Does this mean that WMF has the illustration's copyright now and that is it not licensed under CC0? @Giantflightlessbirds@OSpingou (WMF) whym (talk) 03:51, 6 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I was there at the time it was being created and convinced the Idea Ink artist to add "CC0" to the illustration so we could photograph and upload it, but WMF or Wikimania representatives may well have purchased the copyright as a commissioned work – in which case only they can authorise its release to Commons under an open license. Idea Ink seemed to have no idea of what the copyright/licensing status of the work they created was; perhaps this could have been made clearer by the organisers. —Giantflightlessbirds (talk) 07:59, 6 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, @Giantflightlessbirds and @Whym. Thank you both for engaging in a discussion about the licensing of the illustration uploaded on Commons. First of all, I’d like to clarify that we commissioned Idea Ink to create this illustration for us during Wikimania 2023. As per our contract with them, they transferred the ownership of the illustration to us. The reason why we chose the CC-BY-SA license is because we want to avoid changes to the content of the illustration without properly indicating it. The information in the illustration was recorded during different sessions and discussions that took place in Wikimania and we are worried that altering any of this information could be misleading.
Therefore, we recommend using or uploading these illustrations with the canonical license as CC-BY-SA. If you have any further questions, feel free to let us know. AAnton-WMF (talk) 16:18, 21 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for clarifying the copyright status of the work! —Giantflightlessbirds (talk) 11:56, 22 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. It sounds like what we want to do at Commons would be: in general, use {{Cc-by-sa-4.0}}, and {{WMF-staff-upload}} if uploaded by a WMF person, and treat other files on a case by case basis if uploaded by non-WMF person (especially if they are not straight shots and contains something other than the illustration). If we want to distinguish the copyright status of the illustration and that of other things depicted in a file, we could additionally use {{Copyright information}}. whym (talk) 11:02, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
