Wildlife / nature images in this category[edit]

Those images are quite clearly images of (depicting/about) nature / wildlife. Since there is a category for just that, it seems quite inappropriate to have them in "General category images". Yet @Antony-22: moved them from the former to the latter. There's also quite a few more in here that are depicting nature like File:Intertidal Zone, Falmouth, MA.jpg. @Alexmar983: What do you think? I think the categories should contain what the category titles suggest they do and that the images should be in the most appropriate category. Also it would be unfair to have images in the General category when they're depicting nature since there are far more images and possibly stronger competition in the Nature+wildlife category than in the General images category. @Prototyperspective: According to the rules, "Wildlife & nature" means "Organisms who grow or live wild in an area." So photos that don't focus on an organism, including geology images, should be in the General category. Antony-22 (talk) 22:58, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Okay well that makes sense. Thanks for explaining. I wonder if people just missed putting info there that images of landscapes and so on also fall under that or alternatively rename the category. If it was a conventional WMC category I think it would be moved to something like "Wildlife images…". An image of a volcanoe is not "vulcanology" but "nature". The last example for the "General" cat is a bit confusing and/or misleading since it also shows wild organisms but an environmental disaster (man-made). I'll have to move a few of the images moved from the General category back if they really belong into the General category. Another idea would be having an additional category for nature images that aren't showing wild organisms. Prototyperspective (talk) 23:45, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I apologize if I am late; I thought I had saved this comment yesterday. There is some gray area, as files can be recategorized based on the preferences of the jury. However, in general, when we refer to 'wildlife and nature,' it implies the inclusion of a species name in the description. Some files related to ecology, in general, can be complex.--Alexmar983 (talk) 14:48, 21 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
What would be the right place to propose the category to be renamed to "Wildlife images…" or to also include landscape & other nature images? Prototyperspective (talk) 16:24, 21 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I can discuss this with Ivo. Personally, we could mutually acknowledge this specification, but there are instances where it already applies sometimes. For instance, in a country where it aids in balancing distribution among categories, such occurrences might arise. These categories aren't strictly defined, so we can lean towards encompassing these landscapes under this umbrella. It's something you can implement for your country, and I would e fine because it's never a perfect partition. However, I simply "reserve the right" to disagree and potentially move them to the other category for the final jury usually if I believe it enhances their chances of winning a prize.--Alexmar983 (talk) 03:33, 24 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
