Signification of this subcategory?[edit]

Why does this subcategory exist? Why are these icons not exclusively in the Category:GNOME Desktop icon theme? Is there any rational reason? Debianux (talk) 16:49, 27 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The main reason is the advised horizontal tuning of gallery name GNOME Desktop icons and Category:GNOME Desktop icons. But the rationale may be similar to the naming of the gallery page: individual images are icons, aren't they? The category as a whole goes into the theme. But feel free to ask for a move. , O, I see: a template has been used which contains an in-built category: therefore the categorising bot doesn't recognize the category, neither does the bot take out the upper (tempate-bonded) category. It has been community advise to not incorporate categories in templates - and this is once again proof of the value of that advise. Havang(nl) (talk) 17:03, 27 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for this information. So, what’s your advise? And why do the files that use the Template:Tango don’t have trouble with bots? Chance? However e. g. this file had some problems with a bot … Maybe we should remove the category from the template. In any case it would be more logical to use exclusively the Category:GNOME Desktop icons for icons from the GNOME project. The Category:GNOME Desktop icon theme doesn’t make any sense and should be deleted IMHO. Debianux (talk) 18:50, 27 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • (1) I looked shortly at Tango project and there are non-template cat's Category:Tango project/smilies as well as sometimes in addition to the template an extra cat Category:Arrow icons. With at least one cat outside templates BotMultichill doesn't tag that item. BotMultichill has not yet tagged them all, but is at about 40% of 100.000 media needing categories on gallery-pages. I prefer the categories out of the template, just for the posssibility of cat-refinements. That should be the first step. Can you do that?
  • (2) One may keep the parent category or change it into Category:GNOME Desktop icons and subdivide the parent category in subcategories similar to Category:GNOME Desktop icon theme/smilies, like category:GNOME Desktop icons/e-mail, GNOME Desktop icons/applications, because if there are more than 200 items in a category, diffusion is advised. Are you willing to do the diffusion?

Yes, I will make the (re-) sorting as soon as I have time (perhaps later this afternoon or tomorrow). I think I will inherit the original sorting of GNOME (see: [1]). Debianux (talk) 13:00, 28 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Remark: I’ve now categorized 54 images (see: Category:GNOME Desktop icons/actions). Unfortunately I’ve no more time to finish it at the moment but I will continue ASAP. Debianux (talk) 17:13, 28 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
PS: After finishing sorting the images I will also adjust the icons on GNOME Desktop icons.
A good job, thanks !!! Havang(nl) (talk) 17:57, 28 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You’re welcome! At the moment I’ve finished with Category:GNOME Desktop icons/actions (I’ve also updated some icons). I’ll soon make the other ones. Debianux (talk) 21:30, 28 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Now Category:GNOME Desktop icons/apps is also okay, except for Image:Gnome-user-info.svg (resp. Image:User-info.svg; see the corresponding talk page). Debianux (talk) 22:28, 28 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

So, I’ve finished now with the GNOME icons. Ironically, User:Multichill wants to rename category:GNOME Desktop icons/actions and category:GNOME Desktop icons/apps. I hope a bot will take on the rename job; I don’t like to make it a second time … Debianux (talk) 21:21, 29 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

PS: I couldn’t add Image:Gnome-settings-ui-behavior.svg to a subcategory of category:GNOME Desktop icons because I didn’t find it in gnome-icon-theme. Debianux (talk) 21:24, 29 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A well-done job. Renaming may be done by the template {{new category name}} on the old (bad) category page. Havang(nl) (talk) 22:16, 29 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately I don’t have any time now to recategorize the files in category:Tango project, but I will do it asap (probably next week). Debianux (talk) 15:58, 30 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
