Transparency instead of white?[edit]

In most cases for these conversions to .svg, white should not be converted to transparency. Check out Image:Bandera Tàtars de Belarus.svg, a variation on the theme of Image:Flag of Belarus 1991.svg, which has a white background. I've been seeing a lot of transparency on Wikimedia flags that should really be white... QuartierLatin1968 21:12, 15 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Cleaning Category[edit]

This category has become way overcrowded, with over 4000 images, a majority of which an GIF's and JPEGS of such low quality that they couldn't be converted to SVG even if you wanted to because you can't tell what they are, especially in the case of ones with coats of arms and emblems including text and other such stuff, therefore I will be purging this category of such files, as I believe it should be used just for flags for which there is actually a use or need of an SVG version. Many others also could simply be converted to PNG, and such files I will be labling Convert to PNG and removing from here. Fry1989 (talk) 07:31, 22 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

First of all, you could have started a discussion on a more visible page, such as COM:VP, before taking action. I strongly disagree that low quality images should be removed from this category; these are the ones we most desperately need a replacement for. Also, tagging flags to be converted to PNG instead of SVG doesn't make sense to me; ultimately, we want flags in SVG format. It doesn't prevent anyone from providing a PNG version in the meantime, but it should remain tagged with {{Convert to SVG}}. –Tryphon☂ 20:23, 24 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Looking through your recent contributions in that area I'm seeing quite a few flags that contain enough detail in their current form to be rendered accurately as SVG. Furthermore there are even a few images with resolutions greater than 800×600. I seriously wonder what constitutes acceptable image size and quality for conversion for you. Something in the range of 10 Mpx? As for flags with coat of arms: Did you check that there isn't already an SVG version of the contained CoA? Sites like FotW also contain information about what exactly is on there, often including an accurate heraldic description which is enough to produce a high-quality SVG version of the image, regardless of how low-quality the source image is. And as mentioned before, those steps of simple research are exactly the same if you plan to supply a decent-quality PNG image as well. SVG is just a little more work but in many cases the more complex shapes and elements on flags already exist on Commons in vector files and can be re-used. As I said in my original statement, there are some flags which, while being in quality enough to be made into an SVG, I felt that there is no need and they could simply be redone in PNG. And to answer your question, yes infact I HAVE looked to see if files here already have an SVG, and many of them I have already removed and labeled with the vector version available. Infact, some flags in here were even SVG already and didn't belong here in the first place. There's no need to be condecending to me. Fry1989 (talk) 03:14, 2 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
