A note on technical definition of distribution[edit]

The technical meaning of en:electricity distribution concerns systems that move electricity at comparitively lower voltages (7KV) to serve local communities and businesses. It follows the business model of wholesalers and distributors. "Tranmission" networks move generated power in bulk to the "distributors" of that power. This notion reflects a business model that is becoming outmoded. In the classic model, electricity distribution never connected to generators. Only transmission systems did that, and did it at very high voltages. Currently, it is common in Germany for example to have generation in a distribution grid, even though this violates the technical definition. I'm not sure the Transmission/ Distribution technical definitions will make sense in 10 years. They already don't make sense in advanced systems where there is local generation, distributed generation etc., and the dichotomy certainly doesn't make sense in many areas outside of the 1st world. So I just left the cat's name and defined it as the common sense definition (moving electricity from generator to consumer) rather than the technical definition (local delivery of electricity to homes and businesses). -J JMesserly (talk) 18:10, 13 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
