Ontology and usage[edit]

Concepts are one of the fundamental entities in the ontology of Commons categories which manifest themselves as topics. Generally, there are several methods to create a sub-category of a concept:

  1. In combination with another concept or object using a relation, generally in the form "concept 1 relationship concept 2". Ex. Category:History of science, where 'history' is concept 1 and 'science' is subject 2, with the relationship 'of' indicating that the category is a sub-set of history specifically related to science.
  2. In combination with a property, generally in the form "property object". Ex. Category:Alternate history, where 'history' is the concept and 'alternate' is the property, indicating the sub-category to be a sub-set of history to which the property 'alternate' can be applied.

Note that concepts and objects are essentially similar substances in Commons category ontology and are employed in essentially the same manner.

Comment Category names may not exactly match the formats above in all cases.
