Title of cat[edit]

The title of the category is somewhat problematic because except for a tiny number of countries coats of arms do not belong to families they belong solely to the individual or entity to which they were granted. They pass down to the heir of that person, not to all heirs of that person. It is quite incorrect (and often illegal) for someone with the last name "James" for instance to use the "family arms" of James. (I'm sure it'll probably be a while before someone responds, so when you do can you ping me on my talkpage?) Thanks! fr33kman -s- 00:11, 5 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

So if they belong to individuals, what is the overall family Coat of Arms called or look like? The "James" in your example thenː would each individual family of "Jameses" have to modify the original "James Crest or James coat of Arms" ?? I am asking because i am creating ones for my genealogy family for fun on a local theme, but if I go by your premise, my personal family created Crest or COA could be real and put up on an appropria̴te page Photo Archives (talk) 18:50, 13 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
