Misnomer[edit]

This category was moved Dec. 2011 from the correct scientific name Calamagrostis epigejos to the misnomer egigeios - w/o any further discussion or explanation, that I could find. The latter egigeios is not a synonym, it's a spelling error. It should definitely be moved back to the correct name. --Burkhard (talk) 19:47, 26 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry but Kew Gardens, The Plant List states "Calamagrostis epigejos (L.) Roth is a synonym of Calamagrostis epigeios (L.) Roth" [1] --Chris.urs-o (talk) 19:58, 26 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Well, the botanist at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew then should get themselves acquainted with the en:International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants which clearly states that the original spelling has to be retained, see Article 60.5. Linné described the species by the name Arundo epigejos, see Species Plantarum (Section Arundo, #4). According to the rules Calamagrostis epigejos is the correct name, as the letter j is not foreign to classical Latin. Regards, --Burkhard (talk) 20:18, 27 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Addendum: After a short websearch it turns out that Kew Gardens ThePlantList entry for C. epigeios is based on the WorldChecklist of Selected Plant Families (WCSP) for the species (another Kew Gardens project). The latter states C. epigejos to be accepted name, whereas the derived record (kew-402643) states the opposite. WCSP record 402643 is the source to which ThePlantList refers; it seems that Kew Gardens fell prey to a typo while transferring data from the original source record.
Since both - WCSP entry and ICBN rules - are consistent with each other, I think the question should be resolved now, correct and accepted name is Calamagrostis epigejos. Regards, --Burkhard (talk) 21:22, 27 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Agree, Wikidata's updated entry (based on ICBN) agree with you: Wikidata:Q157988. Regards --Chris.urs-o (talk) 06:25, 28 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I will change the Cats accordingly. Regards, --Burkhard (talk) 19:43, 28 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
