Category sort keys[edit]

The IP that started the thread above, has been sorting categories into Category:Bundesautobahn 38 using unconventional keys: ⌓ for bridges, ⌘ for interchanges, ⛶ for views(?), ⯊ for tunnels. Can't say I agree with this kind of sorting, not in the least because such unicode symbols sometimes do not render properly (such as ⯊, which for me is a block with some hex code). Next there is the problem of how symbols are interpreted. Besides, this introduces COM:OVERCATegorisation: Category:Thyratalbrücke‎ is now for example categorised under a subcategory of Category:Bundesautobahn 38 bridges and under Bundesautobahn 38 itself. Before ranting, could you please also weigh the benefits and, most of all, compare to the situation before. COM:OVERCAT issue existed before - bridges subcat existed, in a non-empty state, before my changes. Bridge subject categories have been listed in top level cat and in the subcat before - the state I found was a mess - I do not claim its perfect now, but its way more accessible than before. The sort key symbols may be debatable and in part I expected unicode issues. But in December 2019 we should be safe (read: very safe) to assume that every client is able to view these symbols - within the scope of Unicode the symbols used are nowhere near exotic, so I suggest you should update your equipment instead of expecting the rest of us to stick with ASCII.
That said, again, the sort key symbols are debatable, see User_talk:93.201.168.162, quote:
# could be used instead of on second thought. # is an ASCII char and would sort before the unicode symbols for bridge and tunnels, if its an issue that interchanges sort between bridges and tunnels (as it appears now). --84.135.120.150 08:05, 16 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
But then # would sort before * (asterisk) as well, which is undesirable. So you would need to change the asterisk sortkeys to space or exclamation mark before exchanging with #. --84.135.120.150 08:08, 16 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I'd stick with for now, but do not object if you think # is a better/nicer way to display the entries. If unicode chars are an issue, we can fallback to using B, T and X for bridges, tunnels, interchanges respectively. The main intention is to group the classes instead of mixing their items arbitrarily in that category - which symbol/sortkey is used to do that is less important. --84.135.120.150 08:16, 16 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

⛶ is often used as a viewfinder symbol in all sorts of places (not just commons), which makes it a suitable symbol for aerial photography, views from/of, and maps related categories (if you consider aerial photogrammetry as a maps source and the close relation of satellite/aerial orthophotos to maps nowadays). --93.201.172.108 03:59, 20 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
