Untitled[edit]

I believe there has been a shift in the definition of benthos. My recollection from 40 years ago is Benthos was the bottom, whereas Benthon would be the organisms. The term Benthon would coordinate with the other terms Plankton and Nekton. I believe I got this many years ago from Sverdrup's classic book on oceanography but I can't seem to find my copy. I have seen corroboration of benthos as the location rather than the organisms, but recently much less commonly. I have come to the conclusion that this is a gradual change in definition, but I think the original Greek meaning makes more sense.
