Subcategories by area?[edit]

Some of the subcategories are very big. "Towns and villages" has nearly 300 subcategories of its own. How about we try to divide some of them territorially? As a starter for discussion, I append Wikipedia's navbox, showing the six current area committee districts in the first column. I haven't found a map that shows them all together, but maybe there is one. Each has its own Wikipedia article. The biggest is Marr. Robin Patterson (talk) 02:33, 30 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • I am trying to clear up the mess caused by Scotire and in doing this I have assigned some time (about two years) to going through all the Scottish council areas, rationalising as I go. This will involve further subdividing large categories where necessary, and it is suggested that civil parishes be used, although committee areas are of more modern provenance and I have no objection to that where there are any- I find, e.g. that Category:Angus doesn't have them (although its Unitary Authority Wards would probably fit the bill and are accessible from MapIt). At present, Category:Aberdeen is finished and I have started on Category:Dundee- this way, I may gauge the amount of effort involved and also whether any of it can be automated- but sadly, I fear not since many of the Geograph images are hopelessly inaccurate in their categories (e.g. one farms was listed in all of Dundee, Fife and Angus!). Comments welcome. Rodhullandemu (talk) 13:15, 30 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
