English: The k-1d (all lowercase) was the top-of-the-line Yamaha cassete deck in 1981-1982 for the domestic Japanese market. In Europe it was sold as K960. It is visually and mechanically same as the 1979-1981 models 950 and 920. Two heads only, and a rare dbx/Rohm chipset for the dbx noise reduction. The following Yamaha models employed industry-standard NEC chipset. The k-1d/K-960, and the Technics RS-M270, were two isolated attempts to beat Ray Dolby's new noise reduction (i.e. Dolby C) to the market. There was a very brief period, ca. 1981-1982, when many companies simultaneously pushed forward many new noise reduction systems - to close the gap between the cassette and the digital media. They needed something to extend the life of the already doomed cassette format. So, Panasonic and Yamaha took their existing and already outgoing models, and added these large dbx boards. By 1982, the war was over, and Ray Dolby had won the market completely. Dbx, supported by Panasonic, somehow lingered to 1986 or 1987.
