English: The walking beam engine, technically known as a vertical beam engine, was a type of marine steam engine in widespread use in the United States in the 19th and early 20th centuries, and occasionally in other countries. They were used mainly to power sidewheel steamboats and steamships, though a small number were adapted to power screw steamers.
