English: The Vergelegen Estate is home to one of South Africa's oldest collection of books, journals and diaries which is housed in the exquisite library on the estate. Originally designed and built as a wine cellar, the cellar was converted in to a stately library during the Phillips era. Lady Florence Phillips was married to Sir Lionel Phillips and under her direction, she transformed the dilapidated estate in to a wondrous haven. She was also a literary, art and culture fan and the collection of books housed in the library attest to this reality. The collection of works in the library features some 4500 books and is home to rare travel books, and even Simon van der Stel's personal diary.
