Public natural gas service began in Allentown during 1851 when Dr. William F. Danowsky, a Polish immigrant physician and druggist began lighting his shop at 735 Hamilton Street with a glowing light. Some might have thought it was a ghostly manifestation. But others in the crowds of local residents that came to see it knew the flickering flame was a scientific marvel: natural gas illumination had come to Allentown.

Danowsky produced his gas from a 14-foot square building at the rear of his home and he had not done it just for fun. As fast as he could have pipes laid, shop owners and residents wanted gas light. In 1859, with the aid of banker William Blumer's private bank, Danowsky purchased land roughly behind where the Allentown Art Museum now stands and constructed a larger facility.

In 1878, the Allentown Gas Company was formed. In 1914, it merged with the Bethlehem Gas Company, forming the Allentown-Bethlehem Gas Company. In 1953, the United Gas Improvement (UGI) Company of Philadelphia acquired the company, and it became the Lehigh Valley Gas Division of UGI. In 1965, the company began calling itself simply UGI, although it's official name remained the same.
