English: This block contains the 214 radicals used to describe the composition of CJK Unified ideographs and to classify them in Kangxi’s Classic Chinese dictionary (written during the Ming dynasty). The indicated stroke counts for these radicals is accurate only for ideographs used in Classic Chinese).
  • Each Kangxi radical encoded distinctly in Unicode is a multilingual symbol (not translatable like ideographs in sentences), associated with one or a few distinctive CJK unified ideographs, encoded separately and whose actual usage, composition and stroke count may depend on variants used in the various East Asian script styles.
  • The actually composed modern CJK unified ideographs (notably those used in simplified Chinese or Japanese Shinjitai, but even sometimes in traditional Chinese and in traditional Japanese kanjis) are frequently reducing one or more strokes from the traditional Kangxi radical with which they are still classified, keeping them classified like Ming ideographs. Some composed modern CJK unified ideograph variants may be better described using one or more variants for some radicals (encoded separately in the CJK Radicals Supplement block), whose actual stroke count may also be different from the stroke count of Kangxi radicals from which they derive.
  • All these ideograph variants (old or modern) may be composed and distinguished in encoded texts, using ideographic variation sequences from the Ideographic Variation Database (IVD), part of the standard Unicode Character Database (UCD), by appending a variation selector to the unified ideograph (See also Variant Chinese characters in Wikipedia).
  • For normal writing, radicals should not be used in texts (except for the description of ideographic glyphs, or as common sorting keys in dictionary-based classifications) and should be replaced by the most accurate unified ideograph associated to these radicals.
