This series consists of photographs documenting economic recovery in Western Europe following World War II. Countries represented include Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Sweden, Switzerland, Trieste, Turkey, the United Kingdom, France, and Yugoslavia. The pictures document all phases of economic recovery from 1948 to 1968, with the majority depicting events before 1956. Photographs from the 1948-1951 period portray the early stages of Marshall Plan activity, including deliveries of staples such as flour, coal, leather, cotton, machinery, and pharmaceuticals. Photographs of major exhibits staged by the Information Division are numerous for this period. After 1950, the prints document the achievements of the Marshall Plan, especially technical assistance, land reclamation, and flood control projects; agricultural extension and exchange programs; defense assistance; transportation improvements; and modernization of heavy industries and mining. Picture stories titled "Day in the Life of", document the benefits of aid on the individual level. Beginning in 1951 and 1952, political activities such as May Day rallies, communist political poster campaigns, political refugees, border incidents and the Berlin wall predominate. European conferences and congresses are covered in detail and include, among others, the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions, Four Power, Kennedy-Khrushchev talks, and the North Atlantic Pact Council meetings. State visits by American Presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy and Johnson and by Vice-Presidents Nixon, Johnson and Humphrey are included. Portrait photographs of leading political and labor leaders from the United States and western European countries together with those of ECA official in Europe, comprise the remainder of this series.
