Tropospheric scatter or troposcatter systems are microwave communications systems which can transmit between two stations beyond the visual horizon by utilizing the scattering of microwaves as they pass through the troposphere. A high gain dish antenna transmits a powerful beam of microwaves at a shallow angle into the sky above the horizon. A slight amount of microwave signal is scattered back toward Earth by water vapor, which is picked up by another dish over the horizon.
