English: Torrens was a full-rigged 'composite' clipper with iron frames and wooden decks built in 1875 by James Laing, Sunderland for Elder & Co.. Her dimensions were: length × beam × depth = 222.1 × 38.1 × 21.4 ft (67.6 × 11.6 × 6.5 m) and 1335 GRT, 1276 NRT and 1098 tons under deck. 1898 collided the Torrens with an iceberg and was partially dismasted. She was broken up at Genoa in 1910.
Joseph Conrad (1857-1924) served 1893 as Chief Officer/Mate under Captain Cope on two voyages, from London to Adelaide and back[1][2]
