English: Three Brothers was originally the sidewheel steamship Vanderbilt, launched in 1857 at Greenpoint, New York. Gifted to the US Navy on the outbreak of the American Civil War, she served as USS Vanderbilt from 1862 to 1873, when she was sold. Her new owners removed her engines and converted her to a merchant sailing vessel, when she was renamed Three Brothers. She subsequently spent most of her time in the grain trade between San Francisco, Le Havre, Liverpool, and New York City where she acquired an enviable reputation for speed and handling. The vessel was a coal hulk at Gibraltar by 1899 and was not broken up until 1929.^[1]
Dimensions: length × beam × depth: = 328.5 × 48 × 32 ft (100.1 × 14.6 × 9.7 m) and tonnage: 2972 tons. She was in her time the largest sailing ship in the world.^[2]
