English: Old Fisherman Vatican-Louvre, also known as the “Dying Seneca”. Statue: black marble and alabaster, (modern) basin: purple breccia, Roman copy of the 2nd century after a Hellenistic original. Found in Rome.

Notes

Français : Mentionnée dès 1599 dans la collection du duc Altemps, l'œuvre fut acquise par le cardinal Scipion Borghèse (1576 - 1623). Il s'agit sans doute de l'image d'un pêcheur, un type statuaire créé à l'époque hellénistique. Abondamment restaurée et placée dans une vasque à la surface rouge sang, elle fut identifiée à Sénèque, le précepteur de Néron, contraint au suicide. La statue eut une renommée considérable : Rubens en fit le sujet de La Mort de Sénèque (Munich, Alte Pinakothek).
