St Monica's RC Church, Hoxton Square

A brick mission church built in 1864-65 for the Augustinian friars, designed by Edward Welby Pugin. Enlarged in 1880. It has an eight-bay nave with aisles, the arcade is timber with exposed rafters.

The East window is by M E Aldrich Rope (1924). The wooden altar and reredos are attributed to E W Pugin (1875); the altar was consecrated by Cardinal Manning. The single-bay Lady chapel is by John Young (1880), and blessed by Cardinal Manning on the feast of the Immaculate Conception in December. Into the front of the chapel's altar was set a copy of the miraculous image preserved at an Augustinian shrine in Italy, the Basilica of Our Lady of Good Counsel, Genazzano.

During the restoration work in 2013 Victorian frescoes by E W Pugin were discovered by the altar.

Father Michael Kelly (1833-1914), the first priest in 1864, was known as the ‘Saint of Hoxton’ for his work with the poor.
