The original of this statue was installed in 1887 and designed by John Warrington Wood. Carved in marble, a woman seated on a bale of cotton holds a trident and is flanked by a liver bird to her left; there are artists' materials at her feet. The whole symbolises support for the arts from trade and industry. By the late 20th century the original had become so weatherworn as to be structurally dangerous and was replaced by a replica in about 1994.
