This was a trip made with the French 'Terre d'adventures' travel agency, in january/february of 1981. The kodachrome slides are printed 'february'. But it took sometime took weeks before you got the developed slides back from the Kodachrome center. So at the latest it must be early februari. The bagage was and supplies where carried by camels. No tents, as 'it never rains', but you needed good sleeping bags as it froze at the end of the Night. My sleeping bag often froze with condensating water to the protecting bag. The daytime temperatures where 25 to 30 degrees Celcius. But with a very dry air, it didnt feel that hot. In the summer the temperatures go up to 50 C. As soon as the sun is out the temperature drops fast and you needed winter clothes by the campfire. The water was collected every few days from the river beddings. (File:Ahaggar Mountains 1981 36.jpg. The water was cooked for drinking and very limited (no showers etc). Travel was almost exclusively in dry river beds, only taking path between the different river valleys when necessary. The vegetation is only in the river bedding in the valleys. The terrain is mostly flat with extinct volcanoes sticking out. It is more high altitude plain then real mountains. In 1981 the security was no problem, but later their was the civil war in Algeria and terrorist activity in the countries of the area. The mostly French hiking tourist trade in the area has disapeared despite effort from the Algerian goverment to declare the area safe. Next door is en:Northern Mali conflict and en:Niger with an unstable security situation and open borders. That is why there are few pictures of this fascinating region.
