A ship can change name and flag state through time, but the IMO number remains the same through the hull's entire lifetime. As a result, it can be useful to identify a ship by using the IMO number.
English: HMC Seeker: The Inland Revenue and HM Customs and Excise Departments merged to form HM Revenue and Customs in 2005, and from this time customs cutters changed their prefix from "HMRC" (Her Majesty's Revenue Cutter, "HMRC Seeker") to "HMCC" (Her Majesty's Customs Cutter, "HMCC Seeker"). Following transfer to the UK Border Agency this was shortened to the current "HMC" (Her Majesty's Cutter, "HMC Seeker") and a new livery applied to the fleet of cutters.
