The Sanctuary of Athena at Pergamon consisted of a large courtyard entered by a propylon at the southeast corner (the facade of which has been reconstructed in the Pergamonmuseum in Berlin) and flanked by stoas on the north and east sides. The balustrades on the second storey of the stoas were decorated with reliefs of captured arms and armor (also in the Pergamonmuseum in Berlin). Behind the north stoa, at a higher level, was a group of rooms which have been traditionally identified as the library of Pergamon. The small Doric temple of Athena occupied the western side of the courtyard.
