Fire-insurance maps of Manhattan published by William Perris; Perris & Browne; the Sanborn–Perris Map Co., Limited; and the Sanborn Map Company between 1852 and 1913.

Around 1849 or 1850, George T. Hope, secretary of the Jefferson Insurance Company in New York City, hired English-trained engineer William Perris to map Manhattan below 22nd Street. Perris published several atlases between 1852 and 1859. His son and son-in-law carried on as Perris & Browne.

The D. A. Sanborn National Insurance Diagram Bureau was founded in New York City in 1867, was incorporated as Sanborn Map and Publishing Company in 1876, was later renamed Sanborn–Perris Map Company, Limited, acquired the Perris & Browne firm in 1899, and in 1902 was again renamed as Sanborn Map Company.
