Samuel "Sam" Lewis (13 May 1838 – 13 January 1901) was a Jewish self-made man and moneylender, son of factor/debtor Frederick Lewis and Sarah Lyons, and born at 1 Lower Hurst Street, Birmingham. Lewis' father abandoned the family. Lewis became a traveller in jewellery and went bankrupt. However he married Ada Davis (d.1906), moved to Mayfair and became a successful moneylender. Sam and Ada had a "beautiful mansion" in Grosvenor Square, London. His enemy was the Jewish lawyer Sir George Henry Lewis, who frequently accused him of usury. He died in London, leaving an estate of £2.5m and was buried in Golders Green. For further information, see Doreen Berger, "Footsteps in the Past" in Shemot, vol.18-3, pp38-29
