English: St. Patrick's Church was built in 1837–1849 after the designs of the Newry architect Thomas Duff in a late Georgian Gothic style, modeled after King's College Chapel, Cambridge. After the death of Duff in 1848, the Dublin architect James Joseph McCarthy designed in 1852 the high altar and reredos. The belfry was added in 1894 after the design of the architects Ashlin and Coleman. Michael Kieran was consecrated as archbishop of Armagh in St. Patrick's Church and chose St. Patrick's in Dundalk as his mensal parish during his tenure from 1867 to 1869. Since then the church is also named St. Patrick's Pro-Cathedral. (See Christine Casey and Alistair Rowan, The Buildings of Ireland: North Leinster, p. 264–265; DIA record; John Gallogly, The history of St. Patrick's Cathedral, Armagh, p. 83–87.)
