Royal Society of Arts created the ancestor of today's well known blue plaque scheme currently run by English Heritage, They were erected in a variety of shapes and colours but most RSA plaques were chocolate brown in colour. They have easily recognisable by their intricate pattern borders, containing the words 'Society of Arts'. Of the total of 35 plaques erected by The society of Arts, less than half survive. The scheme ran from 1867 to 1901 when it was replaced by a scheme run by the London County Council.
