Kurt Heimann

Most of these photos have been taken by Wehrmacht soldiers in Eastern Europe around 1944. They were taken with the camera of noncom Kurt Heimann.

Some of them are taken in the Tannenberg Memorial in East Prussia. Some probably at the Curonian Lagoon.

I consider the two photos of black prisoners of war to be significant historical documents. The others are uploaded mainly to provide context for them.

Kurt Heimann (1900-1985) was my great-grandfather. (And the son of Hermann Schneider, the initial architect of the Eiermannbau in Apolda.) He probably took most of these photos, but is seen in some of them. His old roll films are in the possession of my family.

There is no way to find out who took these photos (or if a self timer was involved). The copyright situation is similar to that of Warsaw Ghetto boy (file). (The anonymous-EU licence says basically the same as the "CC-BY" fantasy licences from the Bundesarchiv, seen e.g. in this image from 1942 or this one from the 1960s.)

The Emden came to Königsberg in December of 1944.
In January 1945 it evacuated to Pillau, with the coffins of Hindenburg and his wife on board.
